"We enable greatness" - This is how Franklin Covey.com welcomes people on the main page. And the quote of the day says:
"All things are created twice. There's a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation to all things." ~ Stephen R. Covey
author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, founder of Covey Leadership Center.

*speechless*
I'm so scared I'm ready to hide in a bush... I don't think I could ever be organized enough for Franklin Covey...

(Nice new banner Ivreniel, the first one with J.R.R. Tolkien!)

Well, I'm not sure what I will say about budgetting yet... need to figure it out first.. it has never really been an issue... I'll get back to that! :-)

Hmm, budgeting. Well actually I'm content with the amount of money I have per month. Okay, I mean sometimes I'd like to buy more and don't have the money for it, but that's okay. I try saving some money each month, so that I don't have to wait that long if I need or want something bigger. I avoid debts as well and that's why I also prefer to pay cash. I think it's easier to make debts if you just pay everything with your credit card, because you sometimes don't realize how much money you really spend...

Good for you! I used to always use cash, and only cash. Last fall I got a debit card for the first time, and it's really handy for buying gas or other stuff, but you have to take care to balance that checkbook each time you use it. THat's good, though, since it keeps you conscious of spending. Cash does the same. At least for me. When I have cash in hand I realize how much of it is going to disappear if I spend more than I allotted while I'm there.
If you have a credit card, it really opens the door to free spending and then at the end of the month, surprise!

i have a debit card, but i only use it for shopping online, which i don't do very often. otherwise i draw money out of the atm and pay by cash - like ivreniel said, it's much easier to keep track of cash. i keep all my receipts and make notes of the stuff i don't get receipts for (like online purchases) and that way i always know how much i've spent and how much i have left to spend.

I also have a debit card. Me and cash don't really go well together, as let's say I withdraw 20 dollars, but only need to get something for 15 dollars - now I have 5 dollars left and will most likely get something for those 5 dollars 'just because i have 5 dollars extra' that i probably wouldn't have if I had paid with my debit card for that 15 dollar item. So I try not to have much cash, if any in my wallet

Well, I have a student job to support me as well as the scholarship from the state, so I'm getting along alright. ;-) Although, I'm on a budget.. that's just norm when being a student, and living expenses are terribly high here.
I have a credit card (Visa) and couldn't live without it. I use it on average 5-6 times a week, mainly to pay for grocery items or when I shop for more than $10-15 at the time. However, I like having cash too, to pay for the bus or if I want to buy the paper from the homeless people or something.
I'm horrible with Excel and making a budget, so I do sort of the same thing as ethelfleda and keep track of how much money I spend. My mom works in a bank and she always repeated to me that I should never spend more than I have got on my account.

What do you mean you're horrible with Excel? What is it?

Yeah, that's exactly what I do.
It actually took me forever to get a debit card. My mom nagged me about it forever until I finally did.
:P
Just something about having a card freaks me out. I like to know how much I have with me at that moment. Keeps me ... sort of in check. XD I keep all my receipts and transaction things I get from the bank. I always know how much I have. And I definately don't try and spend a lot except on essentials.

Yeah, I know what you mean! I didn't get one until after I turned 22. Before then, it was all cash. But I enjoy having a debit card. It's just important to keep track of how much you spend, etc. Yeah, it does keep you in check.

I don't have any cards. I don't even know much money I have in the bank. :P That's what happens when you rely on your parents for everything. :teehee:

^What would you do if you were a millionaire without knowing it, JF? ;)

Yep, I collect all receipts as well. I've got a list in Excel to keep track of all the money I spend and to see how much I still can spend. :) I think once you've done the general table it's a pretty fast and easy way of checking your budget...

Ohh you gotta teach me Rose, I know perhaps three commands in Excel.. *sigh* Such an Excel-inept person be I...

Ivreniel wrote:

It's a spreadsheed program for the computer. It does the math for if you set it up the right way and it's quite handy... provided that you know how to push the shiny bottoms that is :P

@ Rose - :teehee: Now you've made me wonder, maybe I should check? :P

When I get birthday and Christmas money I keep control of it though, and I have a little note in my purse, and everytime I buy something I deduct it from the total and so on and so forth. I think if I was working and earning money, I'd be pretty good with it, as I am a bit tight fisted - I once had some Christmas/Birthday money left until the next Christmas/Birthday - and if I see something I want like a DVD in a shop (DVD's are usually over-priced) for £12 I'd rather wait 3 weeks to buy the same thing off Ebay for £3. :D

Very simply oh padawan. Type it in in the search box, under the DVD category. Select DVD, bid, win, buy, pay, enjoy. :D

Or for more serious instructions PM me. :teehee:

Seriously though I am a cheapskate. But I think "why should I pay £8 when I know I get it for £2 on Ebay?". So if I worked and earned money, I'd still be the same. ;)

You know, I signed up with Ebay but have never used it. Maybe I should start.
