Haha, that makes sence now. I didn't see the english button. But I'm glad that I know its Maehdros. That's still my favorite picture of him.

And yeah, the resque picture is pretty amazing as well. I like how grey Maehdros looks. Like he REALLY REALLY isn't feeling to hot. And his chapped lips... I wan't to put chapstick on just looking at it.

O_O I just poked my head in to see what you guys were 'discussing' and wow. I think I'm scarred. My perceptions of these characters will never, ever be the same again.

When I first read The Silmarillion, five years ago when I was 13, I formed a crush on Maedhros without really realising it. I remember actually making a post on the old Proboards A-U at the time, in which I referred to him as "my dear, dear Maedhros" :P Then, for several years (despite two more readings in that time) it lay dormant. And now, for reasons I'm not quite sure of, it's been reawoken.

So you have no idea how delighted I am to find people of like mind :P I don't know quite what it is about him that appeals... He's a tortured hero, which always seems to make males strangely sexy :P And a lot of the bad that happened to him wasn't of his making. Ok, so he participated in the Kinslaying, but then felt his father had betrayed him by burning the ships at Losgar, and he felt genuine remorse for that and for Fingon his friend. He tried to make amends, such as the Union, and tried to get the Silmarils back from first Dior and then Elwing without conflict. And when he was captured and taken to Angband, it was the result of Morgoth double-crossing him after he'd gone to meet his forces to try to strike some kind of peace treaty. His poor hand :( And of course his fiery ending, which was so tragic; essentially he died because of his father's greed. Oh, and then there's that flame-red hair...

Ahem. Yes... I'll go now before the men in white coats appear

I love Maedhros! I wanna join the club!

First I fell in love with his name then I fell in love with him.

When I first read, "Therefore Morgoth took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim..." I was like 'nooooo! he killed the guy with the cool name! I was starting to like him.' then I read on, "...and he was caught to the rock by the wrist of his right hand in a band of steel." I was like 'Oh good, the guy with the cool name's not dead after all'. Then it got to the part where he's asking Fingon to kill him, and I'm like 'nooooo! I really was starting to like this guy'. And then he survives and I'm like 'yay!' and then I read: "Maedhros begged forgiveness for the desertion in Araman; and he waived his claim to kingship over all the Noldor, saying to Fingolfin: 'If there lay no grievance between us, lord, still the kingship would rightly come to you, the eldest here of the house of Finwë, and not the least wise'" and I'm like "Awwwww".

And that's the story of how Maedhros became my favorite Tolkien character of all time.

Here's my favorite favorite picture of him:

and here's another of my favorites:

Yes, Maedhros is very pretty. :) Especially when he's dripping blood. Jenny Dolen is very good at painting blood. Have you seen her painting of Fingon right after he got killed in the Nirnaeth? There's just blood everywhere, but somehow she manages to make it beautiful and sad rather than gross or morbid.

DatR: She does seem to have quite the talent for art. That particular painting is so sad, but you're right, it's not all disgusting like it could be. It's lovely

Aerlinnnn! Muwahaha, I knew you would come back to indulge in our craziness. :P I just knew it.

Er, anyhow, with regard to his relationship with his brothers... I could see him as being somewhat aloof, caring about them but not really being all that close to them. If he were my older brother, I think he would be good to go to in time of need. His loyalty would be there. ;) ...Aaand I just realized that that makes no sense at all. But really, I can't see him hanging out and playing around with his brothers all the time. :P Far too much on his plate. *cough*It's oldest sibling complex*cough*

...And now, before I embarrass myself further by my randomness, I bid you all adieu.

What do you think M.'s relationship with his brothers was like? ( aside from the other M, whith whom he was close. Obviously. )

I think he probably had to chew them out a lot. lol. We have one instance of this in the Sil anyway:

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote:
But Caranthir, who loved not the sons of Finarfin, and was the harshest of the brothers and the most quick to anger, cried aloud: 'Yea more! Let not the sons of Finarfin run hither and thither with their tales to this Dark Elf in his caves! Who made them our spokesmen to deal with him? And though they be come indeed to Beleriand, let them not so swiftly forget that their father is a lord of the Noldor, though their mother be of other kin.'
Then Angrod was wrathful and went forth from the council. Maedhros indeed rebuked Caranthir; but the greater part of the Noldor, of both followings, hearing his words were troubled in heart, fearing the fell spirit of the sons of Fëanor that it seemed would ever be like to burst forth in rash word or violence. But Maedhros restrained his brothers, and they departed from the council, and soon afterwards they left Mithrim and went eastward beyond Aros to the wide lands about the Hill of Himring ... There Maedhros and his brothers kept watch, gathering all such people as would come to them, and they had few dealings with their kinsfolk westward, save at need. And it is said indeed that Maedhros himself devised this plan, to lessen chances of strife...

I get this idea of him being the one that tries to keep the unruly younger brother's from making trouble. I can imagine him yelling at Celegorm and Curufin after he found out about the whole kidnapping Luthien and leaving Finrod for dead fiasco.

But even though they probably had a lot of arguments, I like the idea that though their relationship with their extended family was a mess, the seven of them always stuck together. (Not lived together, I know, I mean they never turned on eachother like they did on everyone else)

A passage from the chapter on the Nirnaeth that I've always liked:

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote:
Yet fate saved the sons of Fëanor. Though all were wounded, none were slain, for they drew together, and gathering a remnant of the Noldor and the Naugrim about them they hewed a way out of the the battle and escaped far away towards Mount Dolmed in the east.

I love that image of the seven of them drawing together and gathering the survivors of the battle and together hewing a way out of the circle of enemies that had them all surrounded.

The reason I never liked the version of the story where one of the twins gets burned in the ship at Losgar is that it messes up that whole idea of the Seven Sons of Fëanor. The six sons of Fëanor just doesn't have the same feel to it.

How about some family pictures:

And all grown up:

Edit: Look what I just found:

Seven and a half feet! That's impressive.

There's 8 big one's so I'm guessing Celebrimbor's in there somwhere. :)

I love it! Fëanorian size chart. I like that it includes Elrond and Elros as part of the family.

Edit: Okay, sorry, I know it's not Maedhros, but I just found a great picture of Celegorm and Curufin. (Yes I'm browsing the web for pictures of Elves, having a life is so overrated :P)

They're so pretty and innocent looking. Who'd ever suspect them of plotting to take control of Nargothrond. Huan's one big scary looking dog though! Maybe he's mad because he knows his master is up to no good as usual.

Have you ever had Elf-dreams? :P I have to say...I've had better ones. Usually nice elf dreams mean dreaming about Tol Eressëa. Haha. Whilst I like reading about all the Noldor drama, I just feel slightly more at home there...Actually, I've never even had a Maedhros dream! Not counting daydreams of course.

I think I've had one or two Maedhros dreams but I can't remember them properly. :( I just remember that one of them involved flying on Thorondor who later became a flying motorcycle or something else equally wierd.

My first ever elf dream was back when I had only read LotR and had the mistaken idea that all Elves were blonde. I dreamt came to my house and bleached my hair. :P

I had a really wierd dream recently involving Fëanor. Fëanor was at my church (and a regular attendant at that, wierd I know). My church had decided that as a fund raiser people from the church would volunteer to be prostitutes for a day. Fëanor thought this was incredibly immoral and told them all that they were going to Hell, but they said it was okay because they were doing it for God so it couldn't be a sin. The married people could do it too as long as their spouses said it was okay. Definately one of the wierdest dreams I've ever had (and I've had some pretty wierd ones). I guess it had something to do with reading Brave New World in English class, and having read Laws and Customs knowing how the Elves would react to such... deeds of lust and misuse of the act of bodily union.

Hahaha! That sounds like one weird dream! Fëanor the moral.. hero...uhm...just give me a few seconds to take that in. xD I guess Elves in general would protest to that sort of thing, even dear Fëanor... :P

I always thought that Fëanor would be twice as much against any kind of unfaithfulness to one's spouse because of the whole deal with his father's remarriage. I can just imagine him preaching against divorce. lol. Even though he and his own wife got what we would call "seperated". Still, that was her choice, not his.
