I loved dwarves from the moment I read "The Dwarves" series by Markus Heitz. It's a four part book series about a young dwarf who's brought up by men, but who travels to one of the dwarf kingdoms to find out where he comes from. I won't say any more to avoid spoilering, but if you're looking for a nice new fantasy novel about a hugely unappreciated species, I'd strongly recommend it!

Bookwise I find it hard to pick a favorite other than Gimli or Thorin, simply because the other dwarves aren't really described extensively in the books. Movie-wise I really love what they did with Dwalin; he looks and acts extremely though, but his loyalty and trust to Thorin are endearing. And Dori is also wonderful, I love how he always looks after Ori and keeps trying to improve his manners (e.g. eating new food, giving useful speeches in public ).

I agree with you aralas, Dori is one of the less characteristic Dwarves. He is very polite and offers camomille tea to Gandalf when they are together in Bag End.. Not something I would expected from a dwarf! But I really like how he fuddles over Ori.
