He thought of her as Luthien. The legend was born when they went on a picnic somewhere and she danced for him.

That is so........ inexplicably wonderful. That he thought of her as Luthien, the strongest and most beautiful and just best of all females. It shows how much he must have really loved his wife.

And really not so much that he thought of her as Luthien as that Luthien was Edith.

the name itself (Luthien) tells of her beauty and everything. She's the most beautiful elf that ever lived.. if Arwen is not counted in.. though I don't know which of the two is more beautiful. ok, why am I going on about beauty all the time. . . ?

Tolkien's wife was the inspriration for Luthien. I think that's so beautiful.
I think that Luthien was said to be the greatest beauty of all the Elves, of all beings really. the most beautiful thing to ever have walked and breathed on the Earth. Arwen's beauty is compared to Luthien's though, and it is said that it was the same kind of beauty, a dark beauty, which is rare for an Elf. Galadriel, we must remember was considered the greatest beauty in the house of Finwe. There are a lot of beauties in/ who were on Middle-earth, but I think that Luthien is the greatest one. Arwen is her descendant, and she is descended from other "beautiful people" or Elves though. So..... I hope that kind of answers your question and I'm sorry if I've confused you?

Let me get this straight: ARAGORN AND ARWEN ARE RELATED?!?!?!?!?!(distantly)

Yep. Very very distantly. Aragorn is a descendant of Beren and Arwen of Luthien. Or somthing like that anyway. (Someone please correct me because I'm pretty sure I'm wrong.) I know they're related though.
Oddly enough, it doesn't bother me at all that they're distantly related. Especially because the relationship is hard to trace, one coming from Elves and the other from Men. I don't think it makes thier story any less beautiful or perfect.

Nope, me neither. The story is too (bitter)sweet for me to love every bit of it.

But I did love every bit of it. Bittersweet was the way it had to be. It wouldn't have been half as huge of a thing if Arwen had died with him or before him. The whole point is that she stayed behind, knowing she would have to afce that pain. But she still did it. For Aragorn. Because she loved him that much. I think that's one of the things that makes their story so wonderful.

They're both descendents of both Beren and Luthien. Beren and Luthien had Dior, who had Elwing, who had Elros and Elrond. Elros and Elrond were given a choice--they could be either Elvish or mortal. Elrond chose to be Elvish and Elros to be mortal. Elros was the first Numenorean king and was Aragorn's great-great-great-great-great-repeat many times grandfather.

Thank you Firiel. Honestly, I don't know where my brain was that i couldn't remember that. I just read the Sil for goodness sake! Thanks for helping me. I still don't think it detracts from their story at all though.

Well, I bet it's pretty useful sometimes, like there for instance. I usually have a pretty good head for remembering facts, especially LOTR ones because they're interesting. I think I was having a brain lapse. Thank you again though.
