When lord denethor gets set on fire he runs straight past the fountain... why doesn't he just dive in? Why run past it to throw himself off the edge?

Denethor had gone crazy. he was completely mad. Also, he was on fire. There was no way he was going to take the time to look around him and go, "Oh! Water! It can put out the flames!" He was in complete anguish. He wanted to die quickly. He did it the first way he saw how through his insanity and his pain.
At least this is my opioion on it. :P But feel free to disagree.

Good question. To answer it I will say that Denethor was mad. Utterly, and completely mad. He was gone. His wife was dead, he thought that both of his sons were dead, and his country was falling into ruin and war. There was nothing for him to live for anymore. Basically, he commited suicide.

What she said. :P Correct and hitting it on the nose as usual Larael. Also, don't you think it would have driven him even more crazy to see his son stir, to see that he was actually alive when he thought he was dead? Combine that and being in extreme pain from fire, plus everything Larael said, and you have one very disturbed Steward who probably just wants to get out of this world as soon as possible.

Definitely. Denethor might have thought that he was actually killing his own son. That'd be enough to drive any parent over the edge. You've also got to remember that Pip was kind of ticking him off by trying to save Faramir in the first place. :P

^ No problem! *huggles Larael back* just giving credit where credit is due!

Yeah. Poor Pip. He was only trying to save Faramir's life, and no one wanted to listen to him! I always feel so bad for him at those parts! And then he has to go off into the big scary battle to get Gandalf. Poor little hobbit. :P I love Pippin.

You're welcome of course. But I think we need to steer this thread back on topic.
Erm........ my opinion has already been said by Larael. Denethor bascially committed suicide. I wonder though. Do you think he would have killed himself if he hadn't looked into the Palantir and been shown false thigns about his future. I don't I think then at least he would have hada hope of something to live for. This is another case where a character is overly confident in themselves, has false pride, and gets his reward in the end. This is a reoccuring theme thoughout Tolkien's works.
