Very true form the book and the movie. It really shows how brave Samwise is.

The fact that Sam keeps the ring even though Frodo had chosen to go it alongside smeagol proves what a great friend he was. Not only was he prepared to meddle with such a great task in order to save his companion's life [if frodo didn't have the ring gollum wouldn't have tried to kill him for it and smeagol would have won over], but he also, i believe, planned on coming back. Despite everything Frodo had done to him, he was knowing all along that he was going to come back. I think the taking of the ring is symbolic of that. I believe that contrastingly it was a silly thing to do if he hadn't planned on going back Frodo may have been killed for no reason, had gollum have gotten his own way, and the journey would have been pointless. However, i believe the ring is symbolic of the love Sam has for Frodo as a brother and i believe it shows courage. |

Sam loved his world and he didn't want anything happen to the people he loved which I think is one of the reasons that he took the Ring. Also when he thought Frodo was dead I think he knew that Frodo would have wanted him to take the Ring even if it had meant that he destroyed it instead. Ooh, just think what would have happened if Frodo really had died. |

i felt so sad when Sam takes the ring in teh book. I thought frodo had reallly died and when Sam wears it the Ring actualy pulls him down. and then i liked the next line where it said something along the lines of 'whether teh ring got lighter or Sam grew strong, he was able to stand up straight again' |

i agree with you but i wouldn't say that the ring symbilizes freindship and love or so. after all it's one with sauron, made by him and completely evil |

No i don't mean that the ring symobolises these things as an object, i am particularly referring to the fact that Sam keeps the ring for himself. The actions taken by Sam symbolise courage and love etc. What do you think? |

Throughout LOTR, many characters are confronted with the ring, from Gandalf at Bilbo's house all the way through Gollum on the very slopes of Mount Doom. What they choose says much about their character. The great can't be trusted with the ring or they will be corrupted; even the small, like hobbits, aren't safe with it either (Gollum is destroyed by it and even Frodo is unable to part with the ring without intervening circumstances). |

I'm afraid that looking over this, I haven't a clue what your points are, Frodo's-Guide. How does Sam taking the Ring from Frodo's 'body' symbolize friendship and love? I always viewed it as him doing what he knew needed to be done--if it wasn't, Middle-earth would fall into Shadow. He thought Frodo was dead. I don't think he was taking the Ring just to complete what Frodo set out to do. I think he was doing it because it was what was needed. |

True. But my point is, Sam doing so demonstrates that he was not only doing 'what needed to be done' as you have stated , but in fact, he was also feeling that Gollum would lead Frodo to a path of Doom. It was as though Sam knew that Gollums trechery would lead to Frodo's death obviously due to the corruption of the ring. The taking of the ring shows Sam may have felt this. If Frodo no longer possessed the ring, perhaps there was no way in which Frodo could be burdened and also Gollum would be paid back in the sense that the ring would no longer be present - Meaning that Gollum could not sieze the ring from Frodo by means of violence, however, this does not mean that Gollum would allow Frodo to live anyway if given the choice. To be more concise, Sam may have taken the ring for the Frodo's own good. |
