From the time Aragorn appointed Faramir as Prince of Ithilien i thought he ruled it.Until i came across a site called the Encyclopedia of Arda that said Legolas became "Lord" of Ithilien.i know Legolas brought his people there and helped it become the fairest of all the west lands but i had no idea he ruled it.

Who,Faramir or Legolas actually RULED Ithilien :confuzzled:

i don't have any textual evidence, but i would say it was faramir that ruled it in a formal, official capacity - after all, it was part of gondor and therefore only a gondorian could rule it. giving legolas the epithet 'lord of ithilien' probably means rather that he was lord of the elves of ithilien, rather than the land itself.

Yeah, Eowyn's got it nailed....Faramir ruled the land itself, but Legolas was the lord of the elves who lived there.

Cool topic! *Pointing to username!* ;D

So, what *does* Faramir rule? Do people start living in Ithilien? 'cuz I thought, in TTT, only the rangers lived in Henneth Annun. After the war of the Ring, they won't need people to defend the forests. Who lives there?

After the war of the ring,Aragorn gave Faramir the title of prince of ithilien so some of the gondorians went to live there.Legolas who was devestated at how the war destroyed ithilien, brought his people of mirkwood to live there and restore it to its beauty..and ithilien became the fairest in all the westlands...

Cool. Where were the Gondorians who moved to Ithilien originally from? I can't imagine leaving Minas Tirith if I had a chance to live there.

You can't, but they could. A lot of them were people who originally had lived in Ithilien, and were driven out during Denethor's rule, when Ithilien finally became the no-man's-land between Mordor and Gondor.

The ones that aren't accounted for in that statement are those who didn't want to live in a big city, and found Ithilien to be the fairest place for them to stay.

Faramir was steward of Gondor. I suspect he just handed the title over to Legolas, as he had enough work as it was.

oh, that reminds me? Did Aragorn not let Faramir resign from Steward of Gondor? If Aragorn is king, what does the steward do?

The steward would serve like the Arabic vezir. He would be a sort of underking and administrate the kingdom while the king made war and etc.

How much power would Faramir as Prince of Ithilien have? Does he have to get everything approved by Aragorn or something?

As prince of Ithilien, assuming Gondor runs like an average fuedal state as it seems, would be limitless except for donating soldiers and paying tribute to the king out of his fief's revenues. As steward he also would have had great control over the entire kingdom, though less than the king. We can assume the prescence of feudalism by mention of Aragorn bringing soldiers from the southern fiefs in the book, and the mention of numerous lords.

Yeah. Would they need soldiers--Ithilen Rangers--after the WarOTR? Who do they have to defend Gondor from? Does Aragorn not make peace with the Easterlings and Southrons?

Ooo, and I wonder what Eowyn does as Lady of Ithilien. Probably just helps Faramir with whatever he's doing--oh, that's right, she becomes a Healer, too. Forgot about that...hmph.

Well this is what I think..I don't have the book but whatever. Faramir was called the Prince of Ithilien and Legolas was the Lord of Ithilien. Well they are of two diffrent races so it would be plausible that Faramir was in command of the Men and Legolas the elves, and that they both worked together on decisions that impacted both people. That is what i think anyway...
