I think that the quest itself was definately achieved, and I would say that Frodo's purpose was to destroy the ring. Whether he did or not. So I would say he succeeded, even though Gollum did the hardest part for him.

I disagree Witch_King_of_Angmar. Gollum did not destroy the Ring on purpose, he fell in because in greed he stole it from Frodo. Frodo failed because he finally decided to keep the Ring ("the Ring is mine") and only by accident really was the Ring destroyed. But he also succeeded because the Ring WAS destroyed in the end, and he went farther and went through more than any other. So his quest succeeded but he failed... I guess...

Yeah, I think Frodo succeeded. In the end his task was to destroy the ring, and that happened.

Frodo's task was to destroy the Ring. He only took it to the place it COULD be destroyed. He did not do it himself.

Hey Lord of all! The reply you gave regards Eru is amazing. Thanks for bringing that out! :)

Now regards the whole topic and this quote:-
Quote:

True. But then, if it wasn't for Sam to help Frodo on many occasions (ex: at Cirith Ungol), the ring wouldn't have made it to Orodruin. So partially, it's also thanks to Sam for its destruction.

Thanks.

You could then say that it was Gandalf, or Aragorn, or any member of the Fellowship who helped the Ring's destruction becuase without them, Frodo would have got into some very sticky situations indeed.

Or you could say that Sauron helped Frodo get the Ring to Mt Doom becuase without him, there would not have been a Ring to carry.

personally i have never really been able to decide about this... its difficult becasue i don't want to say that Frodo failed after coming all that way, but i don't really think their is an actual hero of that part of the story. At least the ring was destroyed

I'm still going to say he succeeded. I know there is a lot of controversy but i must say i still believe Frodo is a hero. Although at the least moments he struggled a lot...failing would have been not putting in the courage to pull himself back up when falling over. Failing would have been losing the ring on the quest, or being unable to fight the power of the dark lord even when faced with very difficult situations. Frodo Succeded.

I think it was a accident. but also Sam would help him to destroy. I am really sure... well its not bad (my opinion) that gollum fell...
With the ring. two fly's one smash :D
so Gollum did this: :explode:

I think he wound up succeeding by another means than the one planned for him, but the goal was acheived:destroy the ring. It so happened that he wanted to keep it, but it was destroyed anyway.
