I wonder...what would have happened if Gollum had lived when the ring was destroyed?

Would Gollum have died and allowed Smeagol to once again become a hobbit, or would he have pined for the ring eventaully leading to death anyway due to the power he faced through the corruption of the ring?

I've never really thought about that... I tend not to think about what might have happened.
I think he would probably have stayed in the form he was, maybe becoming a bit more hobbit-ish over time, but never fully returning to his original form. He would probably have become a better... um... gollum, too.

I suspect he would have died. Not sure how quickly, but probably very soon. Given he was just a hobbit, and they rarely top 115 years old, and he was 500. Without the ring to keep preserving his life, I cannot see that he would live for very long after its destruction.

well actually, whe he realises his precious is destroyed,he'd probably like run and strangle frodo then eventually go back to his moutain and eventually die.

I imagine he'd die like Darrell said. And also after all when Mount Doom erupts, he probably would have been killed, or he would have thrown himself in the lava out of despair.

I think he would have flung himself into the volcano after his precious, personally. The Ring was his life. It was the thing that his entire being was focused on. If that was destroyed, surely he would have tried to follow it. The look on his face as he was dying was not one of pain or suffering. It was of perfect happiness.
However, if he had lived, he would most certainly have died. Just as Bilbo's age started to catch up with him after the Ring was destroyed, so must Gollum's, and Gollum was much older than Bilbo and he had no ship passage to the Undying Lands. His age would finally have killed him in the end, had he not destroyed himself along with the Ring.

I don't think the question if has an answer. The Ring couldn't have been destroyed otherwise. Had Gollum not fallen into the Orodruin together with the Ring, the Ring wouldn't have been destroyed, at least I think so. Nor Frodo, nor Gollum would ever have given up the Ring. It was the only way. So, for me, there is no what if...

What do you mean by saying that if Gollum had not of fallen into the firey Chasm the ring could not have been destroyed? I don't understand how it would have still existed if Gollum had not thrown himself after it...

Frodo never would have put it into the lava. He decides to keep it, but it's Gollum who takes it and falls into the lava.

In both the book and movie, Frodo steps back from the ledge, and starts to walk out of the Mountain of Doom, a la Isildur, and then Gollum comes up and launched him backwards. If Gollum hadn't been there, Frodo would have gotten out of the mountain with the ring, and who knows what would happen from there

Without Gollum the ring wouldn't have been destroyed. I always think that ending with his precious is something that fits to his character. I think it's the perfect way for him to die. But I think Gollum would've killed himself if he had survived the destruction of the ring. I don't think he could've lived without it.

Gollum was no exception to the ring's power, obviously. We find that those who had fallen corrupt to the ring, did not live or just wasn't sane anymore. Bilbo and Frodo had largely escaped and they had the certain willpower, but that was with the minds of very humble hobbits.

Gollum was so attached to the ring, that it split him into two beings, and I don't think his mental condition could take it if that ultimate power wasn't there anymore to fuel his actions, and he would be so overcome with guilt, he probably would've have lived long.
