The trilogy ends, but Tolkien wrote a lot more on Middle-earth than just the Lord of the Rings.
I don't know if you have already read more than the trilogy, otherwise I'd recommend the Silmarillion and perhaps the newly released The Children of Hurin. Additionally, there are a lot of books on the history of Middle-earth.

Like Eä said, there's a whole lot more that Tolkien wrote about Middle-earth and its inhabitants, but I do agree with you about this being the saddest. Well, sort of. The ending's very bittersweet. Uh, I'm not sure what I'm trying t say.

The strange things is...they make me sad and depressed sometimes, but they also give hope, and I obviously like reading them anyway, or I wouldn't be posting on the forum. :P

Tolkien Magic?! :P

No, you're definitely not. The first time I saw ROTK's movie I had to restrain myself from crying at the ending, when Frodo's hugging everybody (and Dom and Billy are doing "unsexy crying" :P lol). And then I just reread the book again and almost cried at the ending. And the third or fourth time I watched ROTK I burst into tears for no reason...
Etc. etc. etc. You're not alone, I assure you. :) And I like what you said about the story being depressing and yet filled with hope. Also, "Tolkien Magic" is an awesome phrase. :-D

I always cry at the end...the last few lines especially...they just make me cry.
The Elves sail away...Frodo's harmed forever and sails, and...o... :(
I still think the Elves sailing is the saddest, but that may just be because I love Elves to much. :P

The appendix is one of the saddest things too...The Arwen and Aragorn story in there...ooh...that just ruined my day. I really had to cry a lot at the end, when the story seems to go into a whole circle, and Arwen dies at the place they met for the first time, only everything is cold and silent and empty now, and everyone she loves is gone... *starts crying all over again*
I was sad until I woke again the next morning..

Gah, am I the only one who gets that emotional about those stories?

I think that RotK is the saddest one (I cried at the end), but my favorite ones are that and the Fellowship.

I cry in all of them...
The first one when Boromir dies.
The second during Sam's speech.

But I'm baaawling in the third one, from the time Gandalf turns to leave until the credits finish.
