Umm, they would print the book with a name like that (they didn't think it would sell)

It just seems that way cause we're not used to it. But if it were called " The War of the Ring" we would be saying that "The Return of the King" sounds bad and gives away the ending and so on, and I guarantee you that we'd (or most of us would) be happy that what Tolkien wanted came through. Ah well. It doesn't matter now. It's a good book no matter what it's called

i think the title just gives out what mainly is going to happen at the end i think it was a good idea to name it the Return of the King, so i voted no.

In the book the return of the king is very important. In the movie way to less. They cut out the whole healing-thing while that was so important. So if you look at the movie maybe PJ should have, but than he wouldn't have sticked to the books.

^Well they had part of the Houses of Healing in the EE of RotK but not in the theatrical version, which really made me mad.
Sorry I'm off topic again.....

Contrary to what a lot of people think, I don't really think it gives away the ending (though I like the War of the Ring better, since Tolkien liked it more.) I mean, let's say they lost, it would just mean that Aragorn returned to his home country and fought...it doesn't actually mean they really win. Though, thankfully, they do!
This post made me confused. I've tried to explain my feelings, but I don't feel like I did

well i think rotk sounds better but i don't like how it gives away the winner, and i think war of the ring is more what the whole book is about not just the ending so i think war of the ring

I kinda like The War of the Ring for the last book. I heard that Tolkien didn't like The return of the King because it told the ending, and it does! But both titles are ok by me. I just love the book!

but Tolkien made up war of the ring with his own free will. the editors made him name it rotk.

I believe that's a DEFANITLY NO, because The whole series was about the War of the Ring. Even if it I hadn't completely started yet, it's like the whole Cold War deal. Besides that Tolkien didn't name them. The editors did.

I really like the title of the book "The Lord of the Rings" and "Return of the King", cuz Aragorn was waiting for this moment so long, I think he deserved such a title
