I don't think that JRRT should have named just RotK the War of the Ring, bc the war is still going on in TTT and even FotR, too. But when I was in a bookstore awhile back, then I saw this huge book that included FotR, TTT, and RotK all in one book, and it was titled "The War of the Ring".

"War of the Ring" would fit for all 3, not just RotK. It wouldn't make sense because it could apply to all 3 books.

ROTK seems a bit more positive than War of the Ring... and seeing as all turns out fine and dandy i think the title should be focused on the good things that happen rather than the bad

I agree 100%! If the title focuses on the bad things no one would buy that. Do you think you would buy "Something Utterly Horrible That Can Tear People's Live's Apart Has Returned After Hundreds of Years", "Two Young Men Captured by Orcs Escape Only to Find They Are in More Trouble", or "The Man Who is Destined To Destory The One Ring Has His Finger Bitten Off?" No? Didn't think so. It sounds to Lemony Snicket to me. Argh, how I hate him.....

Well, if War of the ring was to be an alternative title to anything it would be the whole series

I agree. I think War of the Ring sums up the entier story more than just RotK - from the beiginning to end that;s really what it is.

I like the RotK name, but for Tolkien's sake, he wanted it named the War of the Ring, so I side w/Tolkien.

I think I will agree with Alatariel. Prof. Tolkein wanted it to be War of The Ring so it should be like this.

I agree with Alatariel. I don't understand why the publishers had to call it the Return of the King. I don't think that it gives away the whole ending, but it gives you a hint at it... I like both titles anyway

i think it is good that it is the return of the king, becuz it shows Aragorn coming back as the KIng, and the War of the Ring happended in all 3 books

I wish he had, but in addition to ROTK not being the last book about LotR, because as people said before me, return of the king sounds much more finishing. Perhaps if Tolkien had expanded the battle chapters (Siege of Gondor, rock on!) "War of the Ring" would have been the perfect title.

I aree!! Though I also think that War of the Ring suites all three books
at the same time I think that Return of the King kinda spoils the book. So I really couldn't choose and who really cares as long as the book is written and you can read it
