Who thinks it would have been better if JRR Tolkein had gotten his way and named this book the War of the Ring?

I'm going to say no on that one. I think he should have named the whole thing The War of the Ring. But for individual books, Return of the King is better to me. Though it does kind of give away the ending a little.

Year, I was just going to say that. I thought for a moment that he should have called "The Lord of the Rings" as "The War of the Ring", but it doesn't have as much OOMPH.

I make myself very hard to explain, don't I?!

I like War of the Ring though, it seems too good a title to go to waste!

I agree with you. I like the title War of the Ring, but for RotK is RotK better.

(Oh, I'm looking to all those new emoticons. I love them!! Especially this one.. :jawdrop:

Hmmm...I didn't actually vote, because I'm not sure. I know that Tolkien didn't want Return of the King to be the title because he said it would give away the ending--and it does. But also, since it's the last book, you need some hint of what's going to happen...I guess. Bleh, confusing!

Yeah but, I'm sure that everyone could already figure out from the other two books that Aragorn was most likely going to take his place as the king at the end. But still, I'm glad it was RotK. So I voted no.

I like Return of the King better. Whoever said that War of the Ring doesn't have as much OOOMPH as Lord of the Rings *hehe* is absolutely right, and I understand them perfectly! :-D

I voted no, I just like Return of the King better. It seems to go better with the other two titles.

And I deffinately prefer The Lord of the Rings to War of the Ring.

Didn't his son revise the whole book and published them again under the War of the Ring? I think I heard that somewhere.

I don't think it should have been called War of the Ring, because Return of the King is what it is mainly about........Aragorn is preparing to become King throughout the whole book (physically and emotionally), so no, I like the title RotK.

I think ROTK gives away the ending! But it was nice to know that something lived happily ever after... I hate suspense!

I like it as Return of the King because it alreadys says that Aragorn is going to be King by the end of the book.

Actually, War of the Ring is now used for one of the History of Middle-Earth books ( vol. 8... ). So I guess it was used for something useful.

I didn't vote because i can't decide. Like people b4 me have said, War of the ring is too good a tirle to waste but i don't kno whether it would have been good for RotK.

Why does it matter?
The book is really nice, I don't care the title, it doesn't change anything to the book itself, I think.
