I have to ask this question: Why did Frodo suffer still from Shelob's poison. Frodo got sick often after everything was over. I thought the poison wore off.

Hmmmmm. Well, the best I can think is that when you're taveling with barely any food, or water, you are constantly terrified of being caught, you are seperated from your friends, and you have no idea where to go, and to top it all off, you got bitten by a giant spider more suited to be a b-movie monster, it would be kinda hard to just get up and walk away without any consequences.
*digs into animal knowledge* And, I think, i'm not sure, but the way I see it, It's a giant spider. It has gaint fangs. A little concentrated poision would not make sence, because of howe big it's fangs are. So that would mean it has lots of not so strong poison. If Im not mistaken (which I may be) It would take a lot longer for alot of dilluted poison to wear off then it does for a little strong poison.
Well, that's the best theory I could come up with! Hoped it helped!

it was not the sting that made him sick, but rather the nazgul blade from the first one. it says this in the book, that's the only reason i know.

Hello . The reason why I am asking is because I looked at the appendicies("Tale of Years" ~ Years of Plenty 3020: March 13: Frodo is taken ill( on the anniversary of his poisoning by Shelob)"). I thought maybe that in addition to him being poisoned by the Witch-King of Angmar's morgul blade, he had Shelob's poison as well. Maybe I got confused . Sorry ! Hannon le to all for the information

If it says "..on the anniversary of his poisoning by Shelob",than the poison was probably still with Frodo. Also,it has nothing to do with Shelob's fangs, she didn't sting him with that. She stung him with her.....um.....stinger (don't know the official name) Being stabbed with a Morgul blade, and being poisoned by Shelob, that would've stuck with Frodo for awhile.
Also,in the Fellowship(movie version)Gandalf said Frodo "would carry that wound with him for the rest of his life."
Poison from a stinger that big would be with you for awhile.Besides,it was only a year later.

I mean, it's a ginormous spider. Who knows what the long term effects are. And I think there may be some symbolism. Not sure, but the book is chock full of it, and it seems like a very symbolismy part
Quote: Also,it has nothing to do with Shelob's fangs, she didn't sting him with that. She stung him with her.....um.....stinger
Well.... normal spiders have fangs! Of cousre, you could hardly describe shelob as a normal spider, being about the size of a small backhoe and muching on orc flesh every time she gets hungry!

Hannon Le Naurdir Rochner !I just got confused. I know now there is no possiblilty that it would also be Shelob's poison with Frodo in addition to the wound he sustained from the witch-King of Angmar's blade.

Awww...I can't believe I just missed this wonderful discussion. I see everything has been answered to some extent, so I guess I will just be on my way now.
Although I will remind everyone that I think the "sickness" was more from the Morgul blade than Shelob. At the end of RotK, when Frodo is finishing up the Red Book and there is a voice over of Frodo's voice, he says:"There are some things that time cannot mend. Some hurts that go too deep... that have taken hold."
I do believe that he is talking about the Morgul blade wound and probably the Ring also. That too could have caused the "sickness", but I believe it was more of the Morgul blade because then when Sam arrives he says:" It's been a year to the day since Weathertop, Sam, and it's never really healed"...something along those lines.
Well those are my ramblings...I'll be going now.

Hello Larael ! Thanks for the information! And everyone else's input I still have a question. Is Frodo's sickness the Morgul blade, Shelob's poisoning, and the ring itself? I hope I'm making sense . At first I asked others if Frodo's sickeness was caused by Shelob's "sting" and the Morgul blade wound. Some gave me wonderful information and stated that it was just the Morgul blade that caused Frodo's sickness. Others confirmed what I was thinking. Either way, I thought wow! so much pain! If the ring does do damage, how and why the weight of the ring still linger in Frodo's conscious? Well , that's it, again, I hope I am making sense to everyone .

Very good question Lady Nienna, and don't worry, they make complete sense!!
I believe that Frodo's "sickness" was probably, in the end, caused by all 3 of those elements. The biggest cause was probably the Ring. Look what it did to Smeagol. Even if Frodo isn't like Smeagol/Gollum, he is still suffering. I think that the Ring most likely has some kind of long term affect on it's bearer, and for everyone it is different who bore the Ring it is different.
The Morgul blade, because it was poisoned and weilded by one of the Nazgul probably added with the Ring (because of their connections with Sauron) did some pretty extensive damage also.
Shelob's sting I believe was poisoned, but because it only knocked Frodo unconcious it probably didn't do much. At least not in the long run...
Well, I hope that wasn't too confusing...

Thanks for the information Larael! I didn't real think about the smeagollum/frodo comparison. Maybe the weight of the ring is different for the ones who wear it. Anyway, thanks to you and all who gave me wonderful information
