Post subject:  Feelings at the end of ROTK
Do you remember what you felt like when you finished the book?
I remember it clearly, I was on a holiday in Greece, and I cried so much after reading the "Well, I'm back". I was so sad all that day, and I couldn't sleep most of the night. It took me a few days to understand this ending, and to accept it.
But now I think it is the best way Tolkien could have finished his book.

*agrees* I was also very sad and I couldn't understand that it was over and I somehow couldn't accept the ending, but now I think the ending is perfect, but I think it was the part I spent most of my time with.

I completely agree with you both! I have read it, it was night (I read all three books in three nights), and when Sam't last sentence came, I was so sad I can't tell! I couldn't sleep the rest of the night, a lay awake and tried to think of anything else, but I couldn't!

I was so sad when the book ended! By the time I reached the "Well I'm back" part I was close to tears and couldn't believe it was over! But I think it was a beautiful way to end and I wouldn't have seen it otherwise. Frodo had to depart, one way or another. He saved Middle-earth, but there's this part of him that will always be scared by the War. He needed to rest and find peace now.

Actually, for me the tears always come when Frodo finally sees the Havens. But the feeling is the same I think.

I don't know if I would call the feeling I had upon finishing sad. Firstly I felt a sense of accomplishment for reading such a large book, then I felt a "sadness" [for lack of a better word] that it had finally ended and that Frodo had really left.

Then I became quite excited because there was still so much to read as to what happens afterward in the appendices.

I guess I had a kind of mix of emotions then...

Yeah the appendices are great. You sort of get over your sadness when you read them. When I did so, I felt really happy for the characters after seeing what happened to them after the War.

Actually I was in NZ at the time in P.J.'s theatre. I was so SAD! :confused2: I didn't cry then because there were alot of people around, but when I saw it again, back at home, I cried like a baby. :'(

I get the same feeling every time I read the end of the book. It's not sad as such, although sadness is a large part of it. There is a part of it that is gladness, knowing that it all turned out right, and all the character s found peace and prosperity, one way or another. I think Frodo departing over the sea is the best way it could end, and sam's ending line is the best, most meaningful line in all the trilogy. It's not my favourite line, but it is great nonetheless.

It's hard to explain what i think at the end of the book. First, i think it is sadness, not because of the way it ends, but more because it HAS ended. It takes such a long time to read them all, that you get so involved with the characters, it just does quite seem real, that's its really over. *shakes head* tis much too hard to explain.

me too. But I didn't have the appendices at first, they weren't included it took quite a longer time till I got the next Tolkien books.

I agree with Arhoniel. You just can't believe it's over... Then you start to read something else and really miss the characters after a while. (that's when you start reading LotR again ;))

It was so hard for me that I actually didn't like LotR anymore for a while, I just thought how can this be the end with nothing going any further?? Ijust can't be all over. I was really unacceptable and it was the same with the movies. But luckily I found this site and now I know that it's not the end, because I can "talk" to ya all... ;)

Yeah that's what so great with all these message board communities. Even if both the books and the movies are over, there will always be someone out there we can talk to about it. So that makes LotR (and all the other books) immortal. Isn't this great! :D
