well... I always feel sad and happy. Happy because everything turns out well, but sad because Most of the characters leave for the undying lands. Heh, in the movie I can't see the screen for the last 15-30 minutes of each movie, but especially RotK. All of the books have something touching in them that make me cry.

I remember I was crying long time when I red about Aragorn and Arwen meeting and when he died. There were very sad words. The very sad end. In general, the all trilogy made me thinking about the story so I can't stop reading it.

I was like, Noooooo! You can't end there! Reading the appendices and Aragorn and Arwen's story almost made me cry. I think Tolkien uses one of the most beautiful pieces of imagery describing dispair: "But Arwen went forth from the House, and the light of her eyes was quenched, and it seemed to her people that she had become as cold and grey as nightfall in winter that comes without a star." Beautiful!

I was all like: I know this is the end, but does it really have to be?

I wasn't diasappointed it had finished, because I knew I could read it again, and I was safe in the feeling that I hap the appendices, and the silmarillion etc!

Oh and I concur, Aragorn and Arwen's story is amazingly touching, it all ends with the inevitable sadness of his mortality.

Do you remember what you felt like when you finished the book?
I remember it clearly, I was on a holiday in Greece, and I cried so much after reading the "Well, I'm back". I was so sad all that day, and I couldn't sleep most of the night. It took me a few days to understand this ending, and to accept it.
But now I think it is the best way Tolkien could have finished his book.

I felt the same way, ForeverFrodo. I felt so sad when I read those last words of The Return of the King. I knew it was the end of the trilogy. It was sort of heart-breaking. I had read the books for so long, and now it was finally over. I knew I could read them, but it wouldn't be the same as the first time I read them.
