Um, Davy Jones's hat is really cool. And Barbossa's first name is really starting to annoy me.(Hector is not a pirate name!)

Aye, that's why it's his name. I believe the whole thing started when Johnny Depp made a joke about Barbossa's deepest and darkest secret was having the first name "Hector," and the name just kinda stuck. I don't know that's even officially canon, but it's the most widely-accepted name (though I don't think they'll ever even use his first name, so it doesn't matter).

Hector is a truly annoying name. I think he'd be best off as plain Barbossa. Even though it is kind of funny.

I like to imagine he was born to a father of an honest trade (hence the respectable name) but ran away to see at an early age. I would also imagine "Barbossa" is not his real surname (I've never heard of a surname like that before) so it would be interesting to learn why exactly he was called this.
