Sigh. Yet again, PJ has decided to put off making The Hobbit. Quote from CBC.ca:
Quote: King Kong director Peter Jackson is reaching back into the movie vaults again to remake the World War II film The Dam Busters.
Peter Jackson accepts the Oscar after the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won for best motion picture. Jackson has said he will produce a remake of the British war movie The Dam Busters. (AP photo) New Zealander Jackson confirmed Friday he will produce a $50 million US remake of the 1954 British film, with King Kong animator Christian Rivers set to direct.
The original film, based on the non-fiction book by Paul Brickhill, told the story of how Britain developed bouncing bombs to destroy German dams in World War II.
But unlike the original, Jackson's remake will incorporate declassified information by the British military since the original.
"It has since been declassified by the British government, making the dynamics of the story and the people involved even more intriguing," said Jackson, who won best director for the third film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King.
"So much of it was still secret," Jackson told the film industry trade paper Screen Daily. "They weren't even allowed to show the bomb itself and had to create a fictionalized bomb."
The sole surviving pilot of the RAF's top-secret bombing mission that destroyed the Ruhr dams said Jackson's access to previously unavailable information means he'll need to get the facts right.
Retired New Zealand Squadron Leader Les Munro, 87, says casting the stars will also be a difficult task.
"I have got mixed feelings," said Munro, the only living pilot left from Operation Chastise, which wrecked the dams in 1943. "One of the biggest challenges to Peter Jackson will be getting someone to play the lead roles — [raid leader Wing Cmdr.] Guy Gibson and [bomb inventor] Barnes Wallis."
In the original, Michael Redgrave played Wallis and Richard Todd played Gibson, the pilot who won the Victoria Cross for leading the raid. It was nominated for an Oscar for best special effects.
Jackson had originally inquired about remaking the film while he was securing rights for The Lord of the Rings in the 1990s, but was told at the time Icon pictures had the rights and Mel Gibson was going to direct.
"Obviously that didn't happen," said Jackson.
The film will be the second notable remake for Jackson, who in 2005 remade the 1933 classic King Kong. His next project as a director is an adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones.

Please, PJ! Personally, I would find The Hobbit FAR more interesting!
(I wasn't sure whether to put this in Misc. LotR Movie Discussion or Mirrormere...so feel free to move me, moddies )

Actually as a MASSIVE fan of old films and especially BRITISH war films, the Dam Busters is one of my all time favourite war films so I find it extremely interesting. I'm unsure whether I like the idea it being re-made but a more truthful adapation would be great - as 1954 was way too near the end of the war for a proper account of the raids to be revealed. I am concerned also in the casting - British actors are a must - there are plenty of known or un-knowns out there so hopefully no Ameicans with dodgy British accents will be cast. I also hope it can be viewed by the whole family - if he fills it full of unessecary swearing and violence, I will be most annoyed. Those things are more suited to Vietnam films. The story of the Dam Busters is actually pretty simple so I hope he doesn't go changing history by involving people in the raids who were never there. I also hope there will be no romance - as it is my experience thart modern war films or remade films are full of things that never happened and nothing annoys me more than this.

from the sound of it...never, but we must hold fast and keep hoping. I dont like war movies....especially from the WWs, they're too sad and realistic...it's bad enough the wars happened but when people make movies out of them, they're only reminding us of the horrible things that happened.

I don't mind war movies, but I wish PJ would hurry up and do The Hobbit. Why is he delaying so long?

I like to think that PJ would make the Hobbit once they get more options for actors.
And because it'd be really sentimental if he made The Hobbit the last film he'll be directing.

OooO! I'm liking that! I really hope it's PJ that does it, however.

It would, but that's an awfully long wait.
As for the rumour...I dunno, I kind of doubt it.

PJ is also doing Halo, which I am really excited about!
As far as the rumors about The Hobbit, it could be true. The July 2007 could be the date for the pre-production, which means the film will probably be in production 2008, possibly even stretching into 2009 and the post-production that same year. So if the rumors are true, maybe we'll get a Hobbit for Christmas 2009!

PJ was only supposed to be producing Halo with Guillermo Del Toro directing. Now Del Toro has confirmed he has decided to focus entirely on Hellboy 2 (YAY!). I know there's a director attatched to Halo, but there was no mention of PJs involvement.
I shall investigate though.

I'm pretty sure he is. I just found it odd that when a Director gets announced, they make no mention of his involvement.
But on the subject of Hobbit. I think if the rumour is true, then it'll be a 2007 start date for the project, like ya said. It's definetly not a 2007 release lol that would be too unrealistic.
