I think it was so unfair of the writers to allow us to hope for J/C, then take it away. I'm reading a ST: V trilogy right now; the 2nd book (I didn't realize it was a trilogy until after I had already read it!) got J/C together, then killed Janeway! Talk about torture. I don't know how many times I cried during the course of that book, but Chakotay's reaction to her death was simply heartbreaking. *sniffs*
