That kiss made me drop my head into my hands and mournfully groan. :'-(

I get why they couldn't kill Rose off...but puh-lease...SRSLY???

But, then, maybe that kiss was a shout out to the stunning romantic tension of the prequels (Anakin and Padme had all the tension of a wet biscuit).

Ah...traditions.... :-D

The suicide missions, were one of the things which annoyed me more the second and third time through.

I have noticed, however, that there are a three main kinds of star wars fans. (It seems to me)

#1 those who love the original trilogy and ONLY the original

#2 Those who love (or at least like) it all, simply because it is star wars.

#3 Then there are those who have mixed feelings about... Well maybe any of it, maybe all of it. They "like star wars" but they don't like the way it was done, or how part of it was done.

Until Disney got ahold of things I was without a doubt #2.

With the installment of eppisodes 7 and 8, I find myself still a #2 with an undertone of #3. I like the new movies, because they are star wars and I am happy to have more star wars content. It is not, however, the direction I would have taken things or like to have seen it done. In the end, though, my #2 wins out. My dislikes I set aside for the sake of my fandom.

I kinda liked the opening mission. It highlighted well, I though, the gritty and grim physicality that is combat even with amazing technology and space magic (I mean "the Force" of course, which is probably theoretical physics and therefore space magic).

That tech fails, and the bravery and sacrifice and sheer bloody minded determination continue to be necessary in combat, was a powerful insight. It anchored us firmly in the place that Ep VIII inhabits right at the start.

I also liked Holdo's big set piece...the photography of that was beautiful...so much of the film's photography was stunning...the way they put that all together, the action, the stillness, the sound and the silence...well, I am not too proud to admit that my eyes widened and I sucked in a breath (but I'm a bit of sap that way in movies).

Yeah, Holdo's last act was quite spectacular! I loved that moment!

When the silence hit the theater opening night I heard at least half a dozen hushed comments, gasps, or whistles of surprise and I was one of them.

It wasn't near as awesome the second time through, just because I knew it was coming, but it was still spectacular.

And apparently, some cinemas are putting up notices telling people that there is a period of silence for that scene and that it is not a technical error.

WTAF?

 :duh:

I heard about that. It's so dumb. I wonder how many complaints they got to warrant telling people beforehand?

I remember thinking, 'Is there an issue or is this to add dramatic interest. I could hear a slight hiss so knew the sound system was working, and then there was audio, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can anyone tell me why it had to be Holdo doing the hyperspace kamakaze instead of Leia? I thought that would have been a perfect exit for Carrie Fisher's character.

Probs because they didn't know that Carrie Fisher wouldn't be with us for the next film. She passed away after filming ended. I think I recall that they intended for Leia to have a significant role in the next film...but I can't be sure of that.

I have to say, I was a little confused about the silence at first. Once I got what was going on it made sense. It was a lot cooler after that! Hehe

Hmm... I thought it would have been a good tweak that would have prevented CGI Carrie Fisher/Leia in perpetuity.

I think they're just going to have her die in between movies, like they did with Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek Beyond.

That's what I think too.

As for retro CGI the already filmed sequences, I think all hell would have broken lose had they done that.

I'm of the season opinion mostly. I think they will just have her die between movies. Although there may have been some uproar if they had CGI-ed her into Holdo's position, I personally would not have complained about it. I just hope they don't try and CGI her into the entire next movie. As much as I would love her to be in it, CGI isn't really her. Maybe a scene of CGI explainin how she died and working that into the story. I could be ok with that.

No new scenes with Leia will be made using CGI or stock footage, is the official statement regarding the last film. Flashbacks of already finished scenes from previous installments might happen, but no new material will be created out of old material or computers. Since she passed after finishing her scenes, with the intention of her of course appearing in the last film, in order to have her die in TLJ they would have had to use manipulated footage or the like in order to change what they had already planned something they also decided against.

So most likely yes, she will have passed away in between the two movies. How or why or when it will be presented is of course still up for speculation.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that they had made an official statement on that. Honestly I am glad they made those choices.

Thought I'd post in the original Last Jedi thread one last time. A good movie it was! If only the prequels could have delivered so well. :kick:
