How you ever wondered why some countries change the title of a book? Or rename the new edition?
Or why they have 'alternative' titles, not even taking into account title changes that occur in translation.
I think it's interesting... so I started a thread about it.

Books I'm aware of where this had occurred
Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone --> Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Nothern Lights --> The Golden Compass (by Phillip Pullman)

A Northern Light / A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly - my library has a copy of each, and it's exactly the same book!

(The sister's of quantock hills series by Ruth Elwin Harris)
The Silent Shore --. Sarah's Story
The Beckoning Hills --> Frances's Story
The Dividing Sea --> Julia's Story
Beyond the Orchid House --> Gwen's Story

Similar deal with the Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce ... Sandry's Book, Tris's book, etc, instead of The Magic in the Weaving, The Power in the Storm, etc...

Bombs on Aunt Deity by Judith Kerr is also The Other Way round.

I'm sure I'll think of more...

Appartently the American publishers changed Harry Potter because they didn't think that American kids would know what a Philosopher was or want to read a book with that in the title. It seems odd since The Philosopher's Stone was a real thing - well not exactly a real thing but Alchemists did really search for it.

I think Northern Lights was changed to go with the other books in the series i.e. naming them all after objects but i prefer Northern Lights as a name though that might just be because it's the one I'm used too. Oh and I've been seeing another book around recently called Northern Lights - most strange.

I didn't know about A Gathering Light's name being changed though.

Yes, I can see why they changed "The Golden Compass"...

Yeah I agree...Philsopher's stone is way better. Luckily I live in Canada and I get what the brits get :D

I find it weird that they change titles - too much confusion.

I got Sorcerer's Stone over here and I prefer it to Philosipher's.

In my library I've seen editions of the Circle of Magic books that have Tris's book, Daja's book, etc., but in a little subtitle they have the names you're talking about.
