Agent Thompson --- if you've no intention to discuss the book in positive ways, then please do not come into the thread and bash the topic of discussion.
Consider this your first warning.

I read it once, and I don't plan on reading it again. While it was well written, and I definately got involved, I found it extremely depressing. It took me a while to get over it.

I had to read this book for school. I found it interesting, yet very disturbing.

We had to read this in school last year. In Finnish though. I didn't really like the book, cause I don't really like the genre that the book belongs too. I thought the books was kind of weird. I mean it was ok to read but not something I liked to much.

Yuck, that book was disgusting, not to mention incredibly boring. I also don't get how all the children survived without a scratch and all the teachers and crew dies...

Yeah, that is wierd how they all survived. But it does make for some interesting lunch time conversation. My friends and I were thinking what would happen if we landed on the island instead of all the guys. It was some pretty funny stuff. Talking about using tampons as floatation defices. Yeah. e're a slight bit crazy

^that would be interesting. But, if you're interested in psychology and stuff related to that, this book can be very interesting and resourceful. I mean, yeah it was disturbing, but it showed what humans-little boys could be capable of when they let primal instincts get the better of them. From an analytical point, it was pretty insightful. The boys on the island was like an expirement, just they were the lab rats. It shows what happens when there is no one to guide them or tell them right from wrong.

I just finished a paper for Lord of the Flies. We had to do a character sketch, and I did Simon. I think I did a very good job. Lots of symbolism in that little guy.

Yeh, I guess it was quite boring, but still very interesting! A brilliant book. Though everyone thins that they will be found and all it is still so interesting to see how they live on that island and start their own society.

Pfft. I'm reading it for the third time as we speak. WHY CAN'T THE ENGLISH CLASSES GET TOGETHER SO WE DON'T REPEAT!?
Admittedly, I'm adoring it this time around though. I think it's because I'm two years older and am able to grasp so much more ofthe subtle metaphors and such.
"There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the Beast." Simon's mouth labored, brought forth audible words. "Pig's head on a stick." "Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!" said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. "You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?"
The awesomeness of the whole thing just gives me chills. It's so... vivid.
I'm kind of happy about my homework for the weekend, as we get to write an essay on whatever part of the book we want. I've chosen how Simon is the Christ figure.

I just read it for school. I think it's too disturbing for me. And I don't really like the point he's making, though I think it's well articulated. I hated that they ended up killing kids. Jack is SOOO scary... And there is so much blatant symbolsim in that book. That's OK though...

I don't think I've ever read a book that I dislike so strongly and yet am still fascinated with as much as Lord of the Flies. It horrified me, to put it plainly. To see the depths to which humanity is capable of sinking, and to see how fast they resort to the basest of nature--it is terrifying.
At the same time, there is something chillingly fascinating about it, something that draws you in and keeps your mind fixed on the story despite every attempt to isolate yourself from it. I think it might be because we recognize some of ourselves in the characters and in the plotline, and are therefore drawn to the outcome, the struggles which are somehow familiar. I think it is all the more frightening in that it is children who descend so far into depravity; children, who are the "innocents" of society.
Frightening, horrifying, fascinating and thought provoking.
I think I hated the book.
