I personally prefer Eragon to Harry Potter. And I dislike both. But I agree that it definitely would never become as popular as Harry Potter...

OK, so I was reading what people posted on that link that Darkeh posted.
And, oh.my.god, someone actually said that CP was the second best author in the world.
No.
Not even third best. Not anywhere even on the best list.
Sometime, I'd like to see what people see in those books.

sorry to break up the bash fest....but i kinda liked them...now I agree that it will never be as big as HP and I definately don't think he's one of the best writers....but i think that it's a pretty good story...i mean he's no JK Rowling and def no JRR Tolkein but i give him a lot of credit for what he has written considering he wrote Eragon when he was only 15

Lol, like I said... JK Rowling is a disgustingly bad author compared to Paolini. And that's awful. He is a horrid author himself.
Shadowcat: Second-best author?!??!?!?! You know, I don't think that these people read much; these are probably two of the only books that they have ever read before.

hm... in my book, the top 5 authors are in this order:
J.R.R. Tolkien
C.S. Lewis
Tamora Pierce
Frank Peretti
CP
Yeah... of course, I've never read any of the HP books.

Okay, ummm, I hate Eragon with a passion. Really, I do. I don't know, a lot of his stuff was borrowed from other books/movies (LOTR, and Star Wars mainly) and what he came up with on his own was rather... ummm, not interesting or enjoyable (that was an understatement! ) It wasn't really well written, and he's certainly not the second best author. Not even on my list! (Sorry, Eruraina, but I couldn't put him on the same list as Tolkein! ) Urgh! I couldn't even bear to have these books in my house (for some reason by dad brought Eragon and Eldest for me - he heard some "good reveiws"!) No, to give CP credit, Eragon was not nearly as bad a s Eldest! [/sarcasm]
Hmmm, I can go ranting on about this, but, I've done that too much with my Eragon-lover friends.

I agree, Eragon was better than Eldest. Eldest just made me want to bang my head aginst the wall at times.
CP isn't on my best author list either. But he should get some credit. His books aren't great but I've seen worse. They're just good. And he was a teenager. Can we honestly say our work is better?
My top authors are definitely Lewis and Tolkein. Past that I'm not sure, there's just a long list of books I like.

I know I have other fav authers that would easily knock CP down... to like... number 50... or worse... lol! But, I can't think of them right now... gr.. I hate when I have the author's name right at the front of my mind, yet can't put my fingers on it... gr... Believe me, if I could remember all the authors, CP wouldn't even be on my top 100...
Okay, actual list:
1. Tolkien
2. Lewis
skip a few
99. some other author whome of whick I forgot
100. CP
lol!

LOL^ Yea i kinda agree, he's not on my top author list by a long shot, But like a said before i would be lying if I said I didn't like the books, granted I saw where he kinda borrowed ideas I think anyone who is a fan of fantasy literature will see that but i think for 15 he did as well as his maturity level would allow, Now as far as copying from LoTR and Star Wars, LoTR ABSOLUTELY I won't even contest that at all...I asctually said something to a friend of mine while I was reading the books about it being a lot like LoTR, However, I can't say anything about Star Wars, mainly because I dislike starwars with every essence of my being, so maybe that why I liked eragon while others did not because I liked a different presentation of the same plot...*shrugs* I dunno just a thought

LoL. Actually, I don't like SW either, so I guess I actually did like Eragon more. Maybe its because SW looked cheesy, and when I read Eragon, I didn't imagine it as looking cheesy.

I didn't see Eragon as cheesy... or at least the book... the movie is, well, yeah...
Anyway, I'm not much of a Star Wars fan either. But by force of my brother(who also dragged me to see Spiderman 3, and I know he'll drag me to see Transeformers), I watched Star Wars a gazillion times out of my own will... Though I kinda like the music! I can play the Darth Vader theme on flute...
But that's off topic!
CP did good for a teen! Hey, I know my writing it horrible compared to even CP's... The way I write isn't the best. But hey, I'm not borrowing a plot or anything...
Though CP's kind of writing is, well... not my favorite. He talks about alot of detail, almost so much that you can't really use your own imaginations that much. Like in Farthen Dur... you really don't have that much room to imagine what it would look like for yourself...

We all think alike, then. I really prefer Eragon to Star Wars too... I think it's because a lot of us prefer historical fantasy to Sci-fi..
Tolkien does that to his writing, too... a lot more than CP, actually. Like I remember telling someone on this forum, one of my friends actually turned down Tolkien when I offered to lend them a book because she didn't want to "read an entire chapter about one blade of grass". So, I don't think CP's details in descriptions are that extreme... just the beginning of Eragon was a little too wordy and a bit odd-sounding.

And even if Tolkien did write a whole chapter about a blade of grass, it would be more life like than the grass outside your house i can bet.
Harry Potter will always pwn Eragon, and im not a fan of Hp either, i like the books but their tooo something for my tastes. JKR made a decent plot, understandable characters with real emotions and flaws. She barely took from other sources, and if she did, she hid it very well might I add.
People are always saying "But he was only 15, give him a break!" No! I Will not give him a break, he should of waited, gotten a decent college or university degree and actually done decent uncopying work! Come on! I have a friend thats my age and her writing is a whole lot better than his. By a long shot.

15 doesn't give him a ticket to take everyone else's work and ideas for his own... not to mention publishing them under his own name...
And I agree about Tolkien... his way of describing things is amazing. CP could never do that.

Hm... maybe it's because it's been awhile since I've actually read some of Tolkien's work... oh well... I'm tired, I would comment some more... but I'm tired, lol!
