i liked the book alot. i read it in like 3 days. i don't care if it seems like it's copying lotr. people say that about harry potter, but i'm sure the poeple who like that don't think that the author copied tolkien. that's how i feel about Eragon. i really liked the book and it has some great characters and i can't wait to read the second one once i get my hands on it. lol.
Sam the Brave wrote: nah, i was doing the same *shrugs* we are equally to blame. Anyway, now that the stuff is covered, how about some pro-eragon discussion. I love Murtagh. He's the man, even if he is stupid sometimes! Sam
yes!! pro-eragon!!!! thank you!!! i did like Murtagh alot. he was my fav character. i felt so bad whenhe told eragon his biggest mistake was being born (or something like that)!!!!! Durza was pretty neat too, even though he's like really evil, but that's one of the things i like about the movie is how they portrayed Durza. and at the end when Eragon saw his backround. man that was really sad. the only problem is i can't picture tronjhiem at all....i just don't any get of the descriptions and i forget what it looked like int he movie. i'll have to see it when it comes out. March 20th i think. were the Twins in the movie???
btw, lots of stories have dwarves and elves and dragons.

^ excuse me, but erm... Melian..is... plain old copying and pasting... its not taking an idea you like and changing it, its taking a copywrighted name and using it. Saul Zaentz(sp) could sue Chrissy over the use of that name.

I hated the movie (although Durza was supercool. I must be weird or something, since I like the bad guys) but I absolutely love the books! They're great! I can't believe Christopher Paolini wrote them when he was like fifteen!

^It's an accomplishment, but he could have waited until he could come up with his own plots/names.

Yeah, I think CP should have waited longer to write the books and spend more time figuring out the plot line & names of charatcers/places.

Well, I think they're cool. If he copied something, it's because he liked it. He probably wasn't thinking of publishing the book when he first started writing it, it was probably for fun. The book, to me, is the story of a boy and his dragon DONE RIGHT. It's waaaaay better than I could do.
And Arya is NOT like Arwen except in appearance. According to the books, Arwen sits at home and makes a pretty flag for Aragorn while deciding whether or not to go to the grey havens. She shows up twice, once in the Fellowship, and once in the Return of the King. Throughout the entire story, she loves Aragorn with all her heart, which is a beautiful love story in the appendices.
Arya, on the other hand, fights in the battles, gets captured by the shade Durza, smashes the fairth painting Eragon makes of her, assists the Varden in many dangerous missions, tells Eragon NOT to pursue her in a relationship, nearly dies from poisoning, and helps consilodate the establishment of Nasuada as leader of the Varden after Ajihad's death. And that's just to name a few things.

^ and in other words, Arya is a Mary-Sue, *shrugs* sorry, i feel strongly about it and im not just saying it to put him down. What he really should of done was like the others have said. Waited, figured out if these names and plots were similiar or exactly the same. When i'm making up names, i Google search them, and see if any valid sources come up, and if they do, i change it. Its not that hard to actually put some heart and some thought into it.

My point was not to say Arya was better than Arwen, my point was to say they were different from each other, hence saying that Paolini did not copy anything but similar names and appearences.
Yeah, O.K., so Eragon and Arya have similar names to Aragorn and Arwen. It's true. But what about everyone else? Brom, Ajihad, Roran, Jeod, Nasuada, Solembum, Islanzadi, Hrothgar, Orik, Vanir, Durza, Galbatorix, Morzan, and Murtagh all have creative and original names.

but the sopts that they take in his story anre very VERY similair to other characters in other books and movies, reviewing not just the names, but th eplot as well would have been nice
and Murtagh is not originial, i read a book published way before Eragon or Eldest and that name already existed, although without the "h", and personally, adding a letter is not original

I didn't know that. Oh well. I still think it's a good book, though. The movie was really dumb, but the book was good. Did you read Eldest? That book doesn't copy anything as far as I can tell.

Hah! Both of those books are practically rip-offs of Star Wars. CP is the most unoriginal author I have ever read.
Anyways, Eldest copies a ton of elements from Star Wars.
