I've just finished reading Jane Eyre and it may have replaced Pride and Prejudice as my favorite novel (gasp!)

I know at least a few people here have read it, so why do you like it or not like it? and other general discussion

I personally love the language, the way she describes things, and the passion in which everything is expressed.

Jane Eyre is a great novel. I did an oral book report on it, and I got an A on it.

The plot can confuse me at times, but mostly I understand it. Jane is somewhat a role model to me, and this is probably my favorite novel after...The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I love Jane Eyre so much! Bellethiel, I like it better than P&P... but I read it first, which may explain that.

Sorry. *cough* it's just been one of my favourite books since I was about twelve, and I just saw the BBC 1983 tv series recently, which I enjoyed very much because it followed the book very closely...

It's partly the language it's written in, and how they talk that I like. The dialogue is impressive! It's also the passion that is in the novel, and ... the story. It's not predictable, it's... I don't know whether I can easily describe it. It's dramatic, it's moving, it's intriguing.
It's easy to like Jane and sympathise with her plight. What she faces as a governess, and what she is torn between - love and her morality. Her morality also makes it interesting, and the passionate way she holds to it. She's quite a strong character.
Also, Mr Rochester is predictable or stereotypical. He's not the good hero, and I guess that makes "Jane Eyre" realistic. It's not just a feel-good romance. It's got so much depth behind it...

That is one thing I liked about Jane Eyre over Jane Austen's novels-- it was not at all predictable, while Austen's novels are usually fairly predictable (at least the final outcome-- not how they get to that point). While reading Jane Eyre, I wrestled with myself just as she wrestles with herself. I found myself falling in love with both Mr. Rochester and St John, even though neither of them are very "lovable" characters. Charlotte Bronte is just such a gifted writer in that way.

I'm right in the midst of it! I love this kind of book. Rather gloomy and very Bronte-esque. Austen sort of is a different writer. She likes to be sarcastic and witty, whilst Bronte is poetic and psychological.

I absolutely love Jane Eyre! It has been one of my favorite books for a long time. I also love the passionate language. Charlotte Bronte is an amazing author. I've read a few of her other books. Villete and The Green Dwarf were both good, though not as good as Jane Eyre. If you guys really liked Jane Eyre you should definitely read Wuthering Heights. It's by her sister, Emily Bronte, in case you didn't know.

I've read Wuthering Heights. It wasn't bad, but I haven't felt the same urge to reread it the way I have Jane Eyre.
I've also read both of Anne Bronte's novels, "Agnes Grey" and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" and I really, really liked them. They were very good, especially the latter. I'm planning to read Charlotte's other novels at some point.

Yes, I know what you mean. There's so much more to discover in the plot, little dark twists and turns, and unexpected beams of light. With P&P you can kick back and let the humor carry you; with JE you have to let your entire heart and soul get involved.
I suppose that's why I've always considered P&P etc to be "light" literature, and found myself delving into JE time and time again, only to see a new aspect which had never appeared before.

I think P&P has plenty if depth to delve into, but in a different way than JE.

I just watched the movie version of Jane Eyre (the one with Claire Danes as young Jane) and I liked it other than the person that played the grown Jane... she was completely emotionless and flat. Not at all the passionate Jane we know

I read it this past school year. I loved it. I watched the movie after i saw it, it was good too. It had the girl who playes rogue from xmen in it.

Missing Charlie already!

The film is great, I agree to that, Lady Arelen. But I had some problems with the book. I thought it rather long and couldn't understand anything all the time Adele (it was Adele, the French girl??) was talking. But the story is nice, no wonderful!!
