No! Shakespeare meant it to be funny. The 'donkey word' means donkey, but it also functions as an insult. I mean, think about it. If I called you a donkey you'd be mildly insulted, wouldn't you? Donkey's aren't regarded as intelligent animals. So Shakespeare, being humorously gifted, understood that by referring to the foolish Bottom as a donkey, he was hitting on a very funny double layer of humor, and compared to our definition of the word "ass" a very innocent one. |

I own the special hardback, with commentary. W00t! If Shakespeare was still alive I'd own the autographed version too. Hehe. It's definitely my favorite of his books! So insane and crazy and random... and then everything turns out great in the end. Perfect. |

All I have to say is that I love this play, I have the Folger paperback version (I love those things - they're beautiful!) and that I'm always caught with it in my purse. |

some people tend to kind of be....annoyed..i guess...by this play somehow.i mean...is it just cuz it's one of the comedies? but i don't see anything wrong with it. i like it, it's probably one of my faves. from shakespeare......though.....i know very few but still...... |
