Sorry, but didn't the guy who wrote Eragon copy almost everything from LotR? I mean, some people say he did it because he likes LotR alot, but that's still no reason to copy the name of Luthien's mother and use it as a name for a city. :bones: :explode:

Alright, so I'm probably just reiterating what I wrote in another thread comparing the similarities between LotR and Eragon. I read an interview with Mr. Paolini about how Eragon was made from notes he made from reading his favorite Fantasy books...After he had compiled all of his notes and so on, he realized that it was like a book. So, he went through and edited it and thus it became Eragon. On the bright side, his parents own a publishing company....so....you can finish the rest....Ah yes, Mr Paolini....

I don't know about similarities to LOTR, but dwarvish is practically identical to Nordic, and the names are the names of important Nordic rulers.

To me, it also seemed like he was a follower of Joseph Campbell and the Hero's Journey.

Yeah, but aren't all stories like that these days? Even our beloved LOTR is highley influenced by Norse and Celtic mythology.

Obviously, but they are stories that come from thousands of years ago, and are retold in different versions ... authors nowadays pick up some ideas from those myths and put them into modern day stories. LotR isn't a myth.

Plus, myths are not copyrighted, are they? :yeahright:

Its still very unoriginal, I posted a thread ages ago about a Norse story that incredibly similar to LOTR, about a ring that was stolen that gives long life and riches, but corrupts the user.

Well nobody said that it was original ... i imagine that Tolkien read that myth, liked it, and made it more complex and interesting.

Didn't Tolkien get inspiration from old myths and stuff? I remember reading that somewhere, or at least I thought I did...:p haha...well back on the subject of Eragon, I've noticed some similarities to David Eddings stories as well...As I previously mentioned, Paolini did compile his notes from other stories and publish it as Eragon....
