Has anyone read the novel by Niel Gielman? It's pretty good.

I haven't... seen the movie, though. Is it a lot like the movie?

No, it's a lot different from what I gathered on Wikipedia. I haven't seen the movie either.

I've both read and seen it. The book is like a novella so for creative purposes, they extended the movie a bit longer. And it has a lot more action than in the book but it's fairly similar. Both very very very good.

Oh it's good, all right. You should take a look in the thread in Movie Section for it. Well, I rather liked it so I think it's good. But my opinions aren't to be trusted.

I've just started on this book and am currently on chapter 6. It is rather short, isn't it? At any rate, I'm still not sure whether I like it or not.

I liked the movie better than the book actually. There were a couple parts in the book that were a little too, well, detailed. But it is a pretty good read, all in all.

It is too short. I agree, Luthien, there are some disturbing parts...like with the unicorn.

Funny, I seem to have a completely different take on the book than everyone else. That's cool though. I thought the movie was great. A little Princess Bride-esq, but hey, I adore that book and movie. I thought the book would be great too. After all, the movie was great, books are often better than the movies, and it's written by Neil Gaimon, who's supposed to be a really good writer. Upon reading the book, however, I found that it was rather horribly written. The idea is amazing and I really like certain parts, but I didn't think the writing was good at all. It was like he had so much to say and couldn't get it all down fast enough. Then, to fill in the blanks, he summarized large portions of their travels. It was such a cool idea, but a common writer's saying is "show, don't tell" and I felt like I was just being told a summarized version of this story rather than being in it and living it like in many other books.

I think the movie and book stand on completely different grounds. The movie is traditional fairytale fluff, a bit Princess Bride ish as Iri mentioned, but the book has a grimmer tone that I appreciate. Like traditional Brothers Grimm, heh pun.
Also, I definitely appreciated the shortness. He said everything that needed to be said and left it at that.

I have read the book and loved it! Which is strange, because normally I don't like Gaiman. Its still not as good as movie, which were brilliant and is one of my most beloved fantasy movies ever, but still, it was awesome read!
