Hey all!
What are some good books? Other than Tolkien books. :P

I'm reading the inheritance series right now, along with(well, more like trying to read) the redwall series... and the silmarillion... almost done with it, yay! lol.

Can't read Harry Potter, wouldn't mind reading it to see for myself if it's bad or not... everyone who's actually read them say they're really good... but mom says they're horrible.

So... got any ideas of books to read? Need... books... lol.

I'm trying to write a book, so I want to read as many fantasy books as I can. :P

"Shadowmarch" series by Tad Williams.
"A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R. R. Martin.
"Discworld" series by Terry Pratchett ^^
Andre Norton and her tiny fantasy books.
"Xanth" series by Pierce Anthony.
"Dragon Riders of Pern" series by Anne McCaffrey.

These are books I read most :)

I enjoyed the HP books- though in my opinion Books 1-4 were great, but 5,6 & 7 bar the last few chapters weren't as exciting or interesting- Still they're one book series that I've read almost annually since I read the first one. I think like LotR they've become one of those books that you have to have read- whether you really like it or not in the end. And the films do the books no justice :D

I second Smaug for A Song of Ice and Fire, though it is a much more grown up type of fantasy that Inheritance.

The Same goes for Gregory Maguire's Oz books- Wicked- The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men, which are amazing too Wicked is actually much better than the stage version. He's really good at telling a well known story from the PoV of the Bad Guy :D But if you prefer something more 'fairytale-esque' Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted and Fairest are lots of fun.

I can also recommend Tolkein's: The Children of Hurin- it's one of the stories included in the Silmarillion but in more detail. If you're finding the Silm tough, CoH is a good way to ease yourself into the high drama of the first age- and the pictures are beautiful!

You should try the Deathgate Cycle. It's a great fantasy series. :) The first one is Dragon Wing.

I like the Dragonlance books by Weis and Hickman, The Chronicles of Narnia is a cute, imaginative fantasy story, for some pirate action a favorite of mine is Treasure Island (I'm reading that right now, actually), and I agree with Turwaithiel, Sherlock Holmes stories are fantastic. Robin Hood stories are a fun read, too.

Oh, and the wonderful books by Susanna Clarke "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell"!

And one of my top favourites, check Trudi Canavan and her best novel "The Black Magician Trilogy" :) Its most wonderful book series I have read!

Now to see if the library has any of them... :P
I've read the children of hurin, yep it's interesting, and was soo much easier to read than the sil. (I'm almost done with the sil!!! Yay!! Only a few more chapters!) lol.

@Smaug black magician?? is it, like about black magic or something? like evil?

I'll definitely pick up a few of the books y'all mentioned!

No, "Black Magician Trilogy" is mainly about good guys practicing black magic in good causes to fight evil.
