Post subject:  You've just read it, and now you think everyone else should
So, what's that series or book you've just read, or are reading? The one that's so good that you want to recommend it to everyone else? You can't stop talking about it, or thinking about it. Maybe in your free time you theorize about it. It's a little-known gem, or maybe it is well-known, and is just not as common in our younger demographic.

What. Is. That. Book? Also, why?

Recently, I've gotten bogged down in college courses, and thus most of my reading has been history texts, which are fascinating to me and other history majors, but probably not to anyone else. However, as far as fiction goes, in January I finally finished reading The Malazan Book of the Fallen, by Steven Erikson. It is a 10-book series clocking in at around 10,500 pages or so, and courtesy of the second, third, and eighth books, it is now my second-favourite fantasy series, after The Lord of the Rings. It is confusing and incredibly complex, and Erikson expects a lot from his readers, but it was also a wonderful read. It is an anti-trope in the same vein as A Song of Ice and Fire, but Erikson did a much better job than Martin, I thought. So, if you have a few weeks to give to reading, I cannot recommend The Malazan Book of the Fallen enough.

For me it's Wars of Emerged World bu Licia Troisi :) I think one of the best fantasy series besides Wiedźmin and A Song of Ice and Fire. I got hooked from the first chapter with young thief girl who later becomes main character of the story. This series is so well written it hurts. I love character development in Licia's prose, she always goes deep into the people's motivations.

Oh! How are The Witcher books in Polish? I have wanted to read them, but my Polish is not good enough, and I have doubts about the English translation.

How many books are in Wars of the Emerged World?

I just reread The Phantom Tollbooth and The Westing Game recently. Both of which EVERYONE should read, I don't care if they are children's books, they're brilliant and wonderful.

I had to read The Westing Game for my 6th grade reading class! One book series I would recommend, at least for people my age who want to learn about Greek/Roman mythology subconsciously, is Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan. They're fun, and funny. :p

Oh goodness, Nurr, I love those two books! They are wonderful childhood memories. ^_^ Honestly, I enjoyed the latter one a lot more. It was a little more mindgame than nonsense.

Crutchie, sorry, I've no idea what age you are. What age demographic is Percy Jackson & the Olympians directed at?

The Witcher is greatest, most entertaining and funny (and pretty vulgar ^^) book series I have ever read. Sapkowski has great sense of humor and it bursts in the books in every sentence. And he has great knowledge of old Polish spellings of words and he uses it very often.

Wars has threee books but there are also other series from Emerged World that I haven't read yet but I bet they areas good as Wars.

Oh, yeah, forgot to add that. :duh: They're probably for teens, aged 12-16. I mean, I'm 14, but I know other people (that are older than me) who've enjoyed them, too.

Cara, I've actually just finally gotten around to purchasing the first Witcher book, though it is the English translation. I might be able to understand the Polish, but probably not well enough to enjoy it more than the English translation.

Tell me if it's still entertaining and full of humor. Sapkowski uses forgotten Polish dialects so I guess it was hard to translate it. Happy reading! :-D

I think I will, definitely. Hopefully at some point I'll read it in Polish, but for now, I'll stick with English, Slovak, and German books. ^_^

Wow, you know many languages. I wish I could read most of books in original. Like in Dune case (which is also awesome series), the translation was made by the same guy who translated Frodo Baggins as Frodo Bagosz. I feel like I am missing something.

Oh, that would be really sad, Cara. Dune was a really good book.

I only know those three languages, though I've read some stuff in Czech (because it is so similar to Slovak). But I am going to study French this fall, so I plan to read French literature over the course of the next few years.

Dune is book of my teen years and thinking that I could miss something kills me ^^ But I am still learning English and will read it for sure in original. Also Lord of the Rings, this is my on my list since I read it in Polish.

I think that reading in other languages (especially in "the original" translation) is one of the greatest motivations for me to work hard at a language. For example, I'm working on my German so that I can read original translations of German documents to use in research for my History degree in college.

Yes, I took the English course to read "Heart of Darkness". It was still to difficult for me to understand.

By the way, I just found new book series I am reccomending to all. Trudi Canavan's books about Magicians, "Black Magician Trilogy", "The Magician Apprentice" and other I haven't read yet. Very entertaing :)
