And it's June 1st! On behalve of Lithôniel I'll say that she has finished the book, but that she's currently experiencing problems with her internet, so she won't be able to join the discussion :-(

As for me, I liked the book. It took me a while to get into it because of all the pirate lingo, but that became quite amusing after a while. I also liked the twist in the end: I really didn't understand why the 'good guys' had given everything up to the mutineers until the very end :)

Ok, this is my only input into the discussion I'm afraid (thanks for explaining my situation Lhun! :) ). I simply adore this book, I think its really fun, and a well written piece of work in terms of the ship moments and descriptions of everything. Jim was a quick thinking character, and though he did some very dangerous things, was always able to get himself out of a scrape in one way or another. My favorite moments would be when he hid in the apple barrel and when he overheard Silver's conversation in the jungle, thought those were exciting moments when everything was planned. And even though Silver was technically a "bad" character, he's still one of my favorites. an untrustworthy scoundrel, but there's something about him that made you wish he would escape the gallows at the end of the book.

^ I agree with you on Silver ;-) Even though the writer of the book seemed towards favouring the 'good guys', I couldn't help but develop sympathy for Silver. He actually didn't seem that bad, he was just slightly at the wrong side of the law  I liked him especially when he tried to behave really nice near the end of the book, when he had joined the good guys for the return journey.

Not sure if you are still interested in discussing this book, but I was wondering about the tattoos from the captain in the beginning of the book. He has some quotes ("Here's luck", "Billy Bones his fancy", and "A fair wind") and a sketch of a gallows, and I wondered whether you think or know that these tattoos have a particular piratey meaning or that they're just made up for this story.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if the tattoo's sayings had any particular references or not. I would think the "Billy Bones" one was purely for the story, since the character was called Bones. The other two could have been made up, or its possible they may have been actual sailing phrases (like "a fair wind" is probably another form of wishing one luck). As for the gallows, I thought that was sort of an odd thing for a pirate to have tattooed, since thats something they naturally wished to avoid! But out of everything I've read about pirates I've never come across anything that would give the tattoos a meaning.
