So I know there's at least one other Discworld fan on here (one of our newest members, Moist von Lipwig, has the same name as a Discworld character) so I thought a Discworld thread would be fun. For those of you who don't know, Discworld is a world created by Terry Pratchett. It's, surprise, surprise, a disc! It is a disc balanced on the back of four elephants (although legend has it there was originally a fifth elephant) who are standing on the back of Great A'Tuin. Great A'Tuin is a giant turtle swimming through space. There are 39 novels so far, plus quite a lot of short stories and several companion books. The books can all be read by themselves with no prior knowledge of Discworld. I'm not sure how to word the next bit so bear with me. Within the series there are certain books which can be lumped together. In so much as they follow the same character(s). Oh you know what? Here we go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld That will probably explain it better than I can! Basically, they are brilliant books! If anybody is interested in reading them, you don't need to read them in publication order. So you don't need to start with The Colour of Magic if you don't want to. I've only read CoM once, years ago when I was about 9 and I didn't really like it or understand it. It was only when my brother persuaded me to read Wyrd Sisters (he realised that was probably more my cup of tea) that I changed my mind about Discworld. So my advice would be to have a look at the different story lines and the books, and pick one that sounds interesting and then read it. Anyway, my favourite ones are the Witches ones (including the Tiffany Aching ones) although my favourite standalone is Monstrous Regiment. I love the City Watch ones too and the Death ones, and the Moist von Lipwig ones. Apart from Colour of Magic, I haven't read any other Rincewind or wizards ones though. The reason being I was originally reading my brother's book collection and they got stolen when he moved out so I've been slowly re-building the collection buy finding them in second-hand and charity book shops. As I don't have that much money, I can only really buy one at a time and if there was a witches book or a city watch book I would buy that over a Rincewind book. But now that I am looking for the Rincewind and wizards books none of the shops appear to have them! ![]() |

Yes! The best Rincewind book is Sourcery. One of my favorites Discworld books, I am in love in main evil character! Yes, I read Discworld for four years only but he is my favorite author, I like him even better than Tolkien. He has amazing sense of humor and he can mix this humor with philosophy. Now I can't imagine not knowing this series. Thought I haven't read the Tiffany Aching book yet. Must be fixed! I started with Guards sub-series and finished reading Rincewind one. So far I love most Moist von Lipwig books, Hogfather and Sourcery. But all books have special meaning for me. |

I've read The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites, and Small Gods I definitely enjoy his humor! I really mostly picked them up after reading Good Omens - I think Neil Gaiman is a bit more in line with my tastes but I do enjoy Discworld. Especially Death! |

So I managed to get the colour of magic from a second hand bookshop yesterday. Been to the Oxford bookshop today and got the hogfather, the light fantastic, sourcery, thief of time and unseen academicals! So I think I've only got 2 novels left to get but I'll have to check when I get home ![]() I foresee plenty of discworld reading over the next few days! |

I started reading the Discworld novels in Dutch, but I pretty soon realised that these books were worth to read in English! I haven't read all books yet, but so far Maskerade and Monstrous Regiment are my favorites. I love the intelligent jokes and the way Terry Pratchett can describe seemingly ordinary things in a hilarious way. My copy of Maskerade must be the most worn-down paperback in my bookcase; I like to just pick it up and start reading somewhere in the middle of the book when I'm feeling a bit down or bored. My favorite characters are Death and the vampire that needs to be regenerated with a little blood every time he takes a picture of something (can't remember his name). And my very favorite conversation (from Maskerade): Death: "Leave it to the living. Generally speaking, they get uneasy when the deceased takes a constructive role in a murder investigation. They tend to lose concentration." Dr. Undershaft: "You know, you do have a very good bass voice." Death: "Thank you." Dr. Undershaft: "Are there going to be.. choirs and things?" Death: "Would you like some?" |

Ah yes, Otto! I first came across his character in Monstrous Regiment, and I'm looking forward to read more about him. I love how Terry Pratchett wrote him as a kind of modern vampire, while still combining two ancient vampire elements: blood and light ![]() |

OK, this post is going to be long but it will be handy to have it. So here goes. All the Discworld novels (not the tie-in books) in publication order: 1 - The Colour of Magic 2 - The Light Fantastic 3 - Equal Rites 4 - Mort 5 - Sourcery 6 - Wyrd Sisters 7 - Pyramids 8 - Guards! Guards! 9 - 10 - Moving Pictures 11 - Reaper Man 12 - Witches Abroad 13 - Small Gods 14 - Lords and Ladies 15 - Men at Arms 16 - Soul Music 17 - Interesting Times 18 - Maskerade 19 - Feet of Clay 20 - Hogfather 21 - Jingo 22 - The Last Continent 23 - Carpe Jugulum 24 - The Fifth Elephant 25 - The Truth 26 - Thief of Time 27 - The Last Hero 28 - The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents* 29 - Night Watch 30 - The Wee Free Men* 31 - Monstrous Regiment 32 - A Hat Full of Sky* 33 - Going Postal 34 - Thud! 35 - Wintersmith* 36 - Making Money 37 - Unseen Academicals 38 - I Shall Wear Midnight* 39 - Snuff 40 - Raising Steam * written for young adults/children (but are still awesome books) Now, the books which follow the same theme/characters as each other. Some books will cross over different groups. The ones where I've put a (!) are the ones which I would recommend people start for reading Discworld. Then read the rest of the books in that group and then move onto another group. The Witches Equal Rites Wyrd Sisters (!) Witches Abroad Lords and Ladies Maskerade Carpe Jugulum Tiffany Aching/The Wee Free Men (These tie-in nicely with the Witches series) The Wee Free Men (!) A Hat Full of Sky Wintersmith I Shall Wear Midnight City Watch Guards! Guards! (!) Men At Arms Feet of Clay Jingo The Fifth Elephant Night Watch Monstrous Regiment (Minor involvement of the Watch) Thud! Snuff Death apart from the first two, they also feature Death's granddaughter Susan Sto Helit Mort (!) Reaper Man Soul Music Hogfather Thief of Time (This is mainly a History Monks book but there is a large involvement of Death and Susan) Rincewind The Colour of Magic (!) The Light Fantastic Sourcery Interesting Times The Last Continent The Last Hero Unseen Academicals The Wizards Equal Rites Sourcery Moving Pictures Reaper Man Lords and Ladies Interesting Times Hogfather The Last Continent The Last Hero Unseen Academicals Moist von Lipwig Going Postal (!) Making Money Raising Steam The History Monks Small Gods Thief of Time Night Watch (Minor involvement) Misc. Disworld Cultures (Are really standalone novels. All are good starter novels for getting into Discworld) Pyramids Small Gods Monstrous Regiment (Has minor involvement from the City Watch and The Ankh-Morpork Times) Miscellaneous Moving Pictures The Truth (the start of the The Ankh-Morpork Times) The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (This is pretty much the only Discworld novel that doesn't have involvement with any of the other characters or story arch from the other novels. Well, apart from Death because Death is everywhere so he does get involved. But only in a very minor involvement.) OK, I think that's all of them. |

Are those suitable for all ages? Or have adult scenes? |

Well, most books are aimed at adults, so I wouldn't recommend reading them to children ![]() |
