I read Seamus Heaney's version of Beowulf this year for British Literature and loved it! I had read that Tolkien had drawn heavily from Beowulf, and now I see why. Really good book, but you'll only love it if you like Old English style poetry. It's really a different style... focuses on alliteration more than rhyme. Which was cool.

yeah, I read it and enjoyed it - I'm not sure what version it was, but it certainly wasn't "modernized" so to speak.
I read it for my History class.

It's a great book.

I read Seamus Heaney's version quite a few years ago and I quite enjoyed it. This year in English Language we studied bits of it in Old English which were very hard to make out what was being said.

And now of course we have JRRT’s prose version in JJRT’s annotated version. I also have a German translation, and Seamus Heaney's version. I remember that the odd bit in Heaney's version annoyed me, vaguely that there was some totally inappropriate modern wording in it. And I also have three movie versions.
