Post subject:  The Book Group: To Kill a Mocking Bird
OK I have a confession to make I havn't actually read the book yet :blush: I was possitive we had a copy in the house as I'd seen my sister reading it and it's the kind of book that everyone has in their house. But we didn't and I was only able to get it yesterday. So please excuse the quite general questions and feel free to discuss other asspects of the book and go more in depth.

What did you think of the book?

Do you think the issues in it are still relevent today?

If you've seen the film how do you think it compairs to the book?

What did you think of the book?
I thought it was one of the best books ever written. The most well used technique was foreshadowing; there were hints far in the beginning that led to the end, it was wonderfully done. The story was interesting...what better way to catch a reader's interest that to have it narrated by a little girl?


Do you think the issues in it are still relevent today?
Definitely. It addresses oppression, freedom, and human rights, and until the end of time, those will be issues. For those of us that live in the US, it's particularly serious. Blacks have been mistreated, along with many other races, for over two centuries. It became more evident in the 1960s or so, when Martin Luther King, Jr brought it to the attention of the world. And such oppression has occurred since the beginning of time: the Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians, captured by Babylon. Skipping a millenium or two, Hitler brutally murdered anyone whose skin color or ethnic backgroud he disliked. It is an ever present evil we can't avoid.


If you've seen the film how do you think it compairs to the book?
It was well done. I saw a version that was made in..probably the 60s. They left out several things, but again, well done.

I studied that for my exam last year! It was good, I like the way that seeing it through Scout's innocence indicates the terrible prejudice in the society.

I think the themes are still relevant, because there will always be prejudice in society, but you shouldn't act on it and discriminate, which is what I think one of the main themes was. Everyone thought Tom did it, but he should have got a fair trial regardless of skin color. Its cool that you see the whole thing through Scout's eyes as she has respect for Atticus anyway that is reflected in the narrative, and this helps the reader to gain respect for Atticus despite the fact that they might not have agreed with what he did otherwise.

(I hope that made sense. I wish I'd thought of that last year :annoyed2: )

I still haven't seen the film all the way through, our teacher promised us she'd show it us but never got around to it. The bit I've seen was good though because it addressed the issues even though it messed up the story.

I've been thinking of reading it. Is it that good? It's pretty long I know, and people at my school have been assigned that book, but I've heard no praise for it. :bye2:

Well, I got To Kill A Mockingbird out from my school library today as I've been without a good read for a very long time and my mum kept on saying how good it was. I've only just started and I'm already hooked! It's very compelling and engaging and even when I'm reading it in my head it seems to come out in a Southern accent - it just feels natural that way! :closedeyes:

I'll let you know any other thoughts I may have on it when I've read more...

I don't know . . I probably would read it but I haven't heard much praise for it other than from you. Sometimes I do like it when accents come out, although it can get confusing if they overdo it and you no longer understand what they're saying due to the heavy accent. :bye2:

I read this book my sophomore year in high school. And I really enjoyed it. I'll admit, it's a bit slow at first, and just kinda went on. But once it neared the trial, I thought it got REALLY good. I definately think those issues are still relevant today. And I think that's why its considered a classic. We also watched the film in my English class that same year and I thought it was pretty good. I'm not one for books into films, but I think it did it justice-Gregory Peck is a pretty good actor and portrayed Atticus very well.
