Was anyone else here completely brainwashed by their parents into liking music from their youth? In my family, you're kind of forced into liking stuff, and my mother has been pounding her music into me since infancy practically. Actually, I don't mind it. It's gotten me into a lot of music I never would have known about otherwise, and a lot of it's actually really good. Some bands/artists my parents made me like: - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young [Also, Neil Young by himself, and just Crosby, Stills, and Nash] - John Mellancamp - Gin Blossoms - Rusted Root - Journey - Cat Stevens - Carol King - K. C. and the Sunshine Band - James Taylor - The Gathering Field [and Bill Deasy] - Steely Dan - Def Leppard - Duran Duran - The Clash Some more modern ones that were influenced by them nonetheless: - Hootie and the Blowfish - The Clarks - The Dave Matthews Band Uh... yeah. Anybody else? |

Oh goodness. Mid to late sixties, most of the 70s. Beatles, etc, through to the rock bands of the 70s and early 80s. My dad loved classic rock. I can't even begin to name all the bands he liked. |

Um yeah I was brainwashed into rock earlier on by my Beatles-loving mother. She also listened to Loreena McKennitt, which is what made me the person I am today pretty much:D |

^ Same. My parents had two completely different musical tastes. My dad is quite old fashioned and listens to things like Perry Como and Jim Reeves. My mum was a huge fan of country, but she loved the Beatles, Elvis and ABBA lol. I got my love of ABBA and Johnny Cash from her. |

My mom listened (and still listens) to stuff like Simon & Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens. My dad listened (and still listens) to all sorts of Classical music, ABBA, Beatles, Cat Stevens, Elton John. They are both big Musical-theater fans as well as Eurovision fans so I got my love of both from them. The same with Simon & Garfunkel and ABBA. |

I'm slightly ashamed to say this, but until a friend of mine made me listen to My Chemical Romance's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" in seventh grade and opened my eyes to the world of music, I only listened to what my parents did. There are dozens of bands I was introduced to, but I'll only list what I still like enough to have in my iTunes. I've bolded the bands I consider to be the most significant, as they're the ones I have the earliest memories of (In fact, my absolute earliest memory is of dancing to Collective Soul) and really the most impact on my current musical taste (Such as my affinity for 90's rock. ![]() Mom: a-ha ABBA Aerosmith America Arid The B-52's The Beatles Buddy Holly Carbon Leaf Cat Stevens Collective Soul Crosby, Stills & Nash Dexys Midnight Runners Fleetwood Mac Loreena McKennitt Matchbox Twenty Melissa Etheridge Miriam Stockley The Partridge Family Placebo Pure Prairie League R.E.M. Rusted Root Simon & Garfunkel Toad The Wet Sprocket Train The Wallflowers The Zombies Father: Coldplay Led Zeppelin Radiohead (Well, this is actually a load of crap because he only liked Radiohead enough to holler "I LOVE THIS SONG" whenever Creep came on the radio... And then change it halfway through.) U2 |

Well, my mom really only listened to Classical and stuff (or at least, that's what she listened to on purpose, as opposed to tolerating her brother's music, etc.), but my dad listened to more or less everything, so I've picked up a lot from him, methinks. Especially my tolerance for country. I'm a big fan of country music now. ![]() |

I'm surprised nobody elses parents listen to the Grateful Dead. Or maybe I'm the only one with uber hippie parents?? ![]() It's really interesting to see what parent's listened to, you can sort of see what age the parents grew up in xD |

My mother only ever listens to old hymns (which are OK) or really freaky stuff like opera. ![]() My dad and my mom have had conflicting opinions on music for ages. My dad listens to (and I grew up on): Beatles Beach Boys ABBA Boney M The Mommas and the Poppas Peter, Paul, and Mary Those are the primary ones I remember. I don't like any of them anymore, except for a few ABBA songs. However, the classic rock probably definitely has something to do with the fact that I am now a hardcore rocker. ![]() ![]() And I guess my dad's love of the Beach Boys probably influenced my love of Relient K... Relient K has said they were influenced by the Beach Boys, and you can really hear that in some of their songs where they have a bunch of vocal harmony very similar to the Beach Boys. |

Dad is 88, & mom is 81. ![]() A few more bands dad liked that I heard a lot are Tijuana Brass, Johnny Cash, The New Christy Minstrals, & Johnny Horton. Dad was of the opinion that music was ruined by Bill Haley and Elvis Presley, and especially the Beatles! ![]() |
