We do have that white toast stuff (basically square slices) here in Germany, too – the one with the nutritional value of Styrofoam, and if that turns grey, you are entirely right, Hanasian. One could say that we have a threesome of bread categories in Germany (with very fuzzy borders): white (which would include the French baguette and other such Mediterranean varieties), grey (with a dark brown crust) and black (which may be best known as pumpernickel in the Anglo-Saxon world, though it may also be dark brown inside, with no noticeable crust). As I may have mentioned before, the variety of bread in Germany is probably the highest in the world, partly due to the fact that we border on nine countries, a number that is only matched or topped by much larger countries. As borders are mostly accidents of history, regions bordering on those nine neighbors certainly have more in common with the nominal “foreigners” than with nominal “countrymen and –women” in more distant parts of the country. And not just in bread, the entire cuisine can be vastly different within Germany, but not between near neighbors across nominal borders.  Noodle salad. |
