Apropos of a set of German TV documentary shows called “Terra Australis” (my wife’s still watching it) I had a “statistics freak” attack (I have delved into the arcana of baseball too deeply – it’s incurable). Comparing Sydney, Melbourne and Berlin, our largest city at 3.7 million inhabitants and 892 km² (though our largest urban agglomeration is the Ruhr area with about 10 million).

Seems an attempt at comparison is futile, as the organization of local government units is too different. But what caused me to do an “Eh, wot?!?” double-take appropriate to our site was a little detail in the list of names of the local government areas of Greater Melbourne: of the 31 units, 27 are called “city” – and 4 are called "shire". So that’s where all the Hobbits have gotten off to! :-D

Decided to give a rerun of the very first 2010 episode of “Sherlock” with “Smaug” and “Bilbo” a try, and actually enjoyed it. :)

The shortest woman to ever give birth, since we've been recording such things, is Stacey Herald, mother of three, and 2'4' (71cm) tall.

I’ve put two fattish non-fiction books that I’ve been (re-) reading on hold because I’m getting annoyed at the authors’ current droning redundancy. A third (the fattest, and also a re-read) has not quite reached that annoyance stage yet, but I have today bought a couple of new such books in the low-to-high 200-page range that may very likely be much less annoying. To be continued …(?)

Been reading the fattish (1200-page) “Reader’s Guide” book of the 2006 two-volume “J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide” by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond. Kind of a specialist companion to Foster, Tyler and Co., concentrating on JRRT’s writings besides LoTR and TH, and his life, including places and people who were associated with him.
