Clarence Corner Hotel aka Brisbane Brewhouse. Haven't been in a longtime, but they did have Stanly Cup games a while back.

Hehe honestly Gandolorin... I have no idea WHAT you are talking about?!

 me either ... He is afterall retired and watches squirrels for a pastime ...

Well, watching them (and chucking down walnuts for them when they are around) has one slight disadvantage versus TV: the scheduling is a tad irregular. But compared to some shows, watching the snow melt (as it did today) is more appealing than TV.

I know what you mean, Gando. If it wasn't for hockey, I'd have nothing to watch myself.

Meh. Incompletely said, oh shepherd among us. When I see squirrels, I do not simply watch them, I chuck down various kinds of nuts that they may find useful for winter storage. :p

And btw, our city of about 115,000 inhabitants has a wide north-south swath of (potential) flood plains, making this area an excellent pasture for grazing animals (except for flood occasions). Just recently we saw a large herd of sheep there (even in Germany, we have people – idealists, without a question – who take on this job of wandering shepherds).

Do you see many deer, Gando? We have a bunch of regulars around here.

Not where we live. But the parts of our city (or "suburbs") where one might see deer etc. are very close to the official city boundaries (occasional within them).

Really?? In a city that big Gandolorin?? That's pretty cool, I would not have expected that in a city with so many people.

I think for size (acreage) and population (density) Germany has quite a high percentage of forest acreage (30% as of 2008 as per Wiki, plus 34% of arable land). This varies quite widely from state to state, and region to region. The flood plains I mentioned above are quite huge for the size of the river? stream? by comparison with any other city I know of. And we do have some hills close by where any sort of agriculture is out of the question simply for reasons of steepness, which are therefore forested - though some of the flatlands are also so, though there again the is a bit of an issue with mono-culture fir (spruce?) trees, imports from Scandinavia in the 16th or so century aka the Little Ice Age, which are now getting sunburn (and being recultivated with more appropriate trees). 115,000 inhabitants, about 1000 years old, with a mostly baroque architecture in the central city, a large influx of Huguenots in the late 17th century (still noticeable in small company and family names), but with that outsized flood plain and a relatively short drive into quite rural areas. And it borders on Nuremberg to the south, so to perhaps the only large city in Germany with its walls-and-moats fortifications surrounding the inner city still intact. Not a bad place to live, for my taste. :)

I've been binging on Christmas cooking shows.

Not a fan of cooking shows generally. And very recently we watched a show called “The Quick Dish” (sort of) on the one very regional TV channel here. Yo, sure, professional cook doing things at warp speed – just thinking of how he chopped mushrooms with a big kitchen knife gives me the shivers! That’s like looking at a world-class flamenco guitarist (like perhaps the late Paco de Lucia) let his finger fly over the strings while you’re having issues learning your second chord in guitar 101. Somewhat the wrong approach if they were trying for a “you can do this too” effect. :-o

We have gotten a few good ideas from the various cooking shows. Been a fan of Masterchef for many years.

Yes, still here.
