A Ranger on a 'no beer' diet? That's just wrong! 50 pounds! That's half another person! Congratulations!

I'll be walking to the kitchen for breakfast shortly... How was it, Hanasian? Did you meet any scientists? I understand lots of them will be marching in DC and elsewhere today. Science isn't political. I do not understand people who deny our part in climate change. Then again, I don't really understand my Mom sometimes... Or my older brother... I can remember in the late '60's watching the smog build up over Highway 101 (it runs from San Jose to San Francisco here in the Bay Area) during the morning commute. Even though we lived several miles from it, this was before catalytic converters and all the other anti-pollution devices California started requiring. Now, our hazy days are from the weather in general, and very little from vehicles. And yet, we're chastised for our tough regulations. I guess they don't see the difference from when I was growing up... Until you walk in someone else's shoes... And don't confuzzle them with facts...

Fact: My dentist's last name is Au (pronounced Oww), which I find interesting since a lot of teeth are filled with gold. My husband had a doctor whose last name was Au. Appropriate for someone who can cause pain, like the dentist, where, as Hanasian so kindly pointed out, you pay for pain. But then I realized that this site is AU. Simply gold!

It was good. a few thousand turned out, and the keynote speaker was a 25 year old lady who was pronounced dead when she was 20, but is alive and talking 5 years later. In a wheelchair and her fingers and toes have been amputated and she can't move her face very much, but she speaks eloquently! Quite inspiring.

Does he eat them like my cat does? My cat has been bringing her roach friends from the garage into the house at night... They can't get in on their own because of the steps into the house, so it's rather unnerving to get up in the morning and see a couple of roaches skittering around and Penny chasing after them... EWWWW!!! But, I have a BugZooka that sucks up critters like that so I can deposit them in the garbage can. This thing is really cool! And it doesn't kill spiders so I can toss them back outside.

Today is the day that my retirement makes a difference for the first time (yesterday was a holiday in Germany). But I can’t tell the difference from vacation yet, to be truthful.

Fortunately, the dog doesn't eat the mice, but he sure enjoys catching them. He's also caught a bird, but that seems to have been a one-off thing.
The cats don't seem to eat the critters they bring in either, and leave the bodies in odd places. I've developed a particularly sensitive "nose" for decomposing rodent bodies. I've even been called over to the neighbour's house to find the odd one.

Fact: I learned to drive a manual stick shift car when I bought a Volkswagen Beetle in 1979 for $100. Got the keys, got in, and realized it had three petals on the floorboard.

When I had driver education in high school in 1973, apparently the only car to be had with a manual transmission was the Volkswagen Beetle. I made every beginner’s mistake of popping the clutch as soon as the car started moving, leading to the familiar sight and sound of the car getting to a hopping start (or the engine going out). When I got my own first car, a 1973 Opel Kadett in 1978, the Volkswagen experience with reverse gear was no help in getting me out of the car dealer’s workshop: with VW, you need to push the stick shift down to move it into the position for reverse gear. They had to show me that with Opel, you need to pull the stick shift up to get it into the position which was clearly marked on the top of the stick. The technique continues up to the present, except that you now only have to pull a ring attached to the stick upwards, no longer the entire stick.

My first car was an orange Datsun that was fondly called Pumpkin. It had an appalling bad electrical system which meant I had to carry a bunch of fuses.
