I still use my 2008 tower PC (whose hardware would probably still blow away that of any but a top-end notebook of today) as a DVD player whenever I want to watch a DVD while my wife watches TV programs (our TV DVD player is still superior to the two DVD thingies that are installed in my tower PC - one of them is also a DVD writer, the other only a player). My (rather low-end) 2013 notebook has a 15 inch 16:9 display, a graphics card that has trouble coping with the demands of some (many?) movies, and when I plug my ancient but at the time bought quite high-end Hi-Fi headphones into the sound card - never mind; even with my tinnitus, I can still hear the distortion. For my tower PC, I have a 26 inch 16:10 HD display, an actively cooled graphics card, and loudspeakers with their own power source to amplify the sound from the (thus reduced to the task of a pre-amplifier) sound card, into which loudspeaker with the power source I then plug in my seriously good headphones. |

Not that I look like the average Heavy Metal musician in the slightest (with months of excessive heat, shaving my head down to baldness would be more appropriate!). But I doubt that trimming my hair down to Kojak / Yul Brynner levels would help much during our once again returned heat wave. When reading books that I'm interested in, my head would probably produce an infrared signature that would attract rockets designed to home in to such targets that sitting outside on our balcony is a severly bad idea. So having my notebook with which I doodle around in the Internet (mainly JRRT sites) inside our apartment is probably a sensible idea. |

2018 being the fourth straight year with below-average precipitation, and 2015 and 2018 really bad with excessive heat and drought, I've become a big fan of nice steady rain (NOT the storms that seem to be almost the only rain-bringers that make it through the obnoxious high-pressure-system barrier we've been suffering from this year to reach us). |
