i second that sentiment wholeheartedly. olivier was sooo swoonworthy, especially as maxim in rebecca. and of course he remains one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema. okay, so he could be a little too theatrical at times, but he was incredibly versatile and had fantastic screen presence.

i've seen nine of his films now - rebecca, wuthering heights, hamlet, henry v, spartacus, the prince and the showgirl, 49th parallel, oh! what a lovely war and the clash of the titans. i think my favourite performance is in rebecca (and not just because he's so swoonworthy - he's also exactly how i imagined maxim to be from reading the book), although hamlet is a close second (i like the way his hamlet seems to be a melodramatic teenager rather than a tragic hero - it's an interesting take, and no small feat for a man of 41). i was a little disappointed with his heathcliff in wuthering heights (i thought he was a little too reserved at times - i expected more passion from heathcliff) but it was still a strong performance.

Could you tell me who wrote "Rebecca", please?

rebecca was written by daphne du maurier. definitely worth reading, especially if you like the film.

I think I will read the book first, I don't like reading books that much if I have seen the film before

Haha, I knew a certain someone would be here.

*looks at no-one in particular*

Oh, my gosh he certainly is very swoonworthy, and he is a great actor. He is always worth watching.. even if just for his wonderful voice. :swoon:

I have seen him in The Divorce Of Lady X (this was a comedy, and I thought he did really well in it...although the Radio Times seems to disagree), Wuthering Heights, Rebecca, That Hamilton Woman, 49th Parallel, This Happy Breed (Ok, so he was just the narrator :P), Henry V, Hamlet, Richard III, The Prince and the Showgirl, Spartacus, Khartoum and various episodes of the World At War which he narrated.

I would have to agree with ethelfleda, that my favourite performance is also Rebecca. It may well be my favourite of his films, as Rebecca is one of my favourite films ever, and certainly my favourite Hitchcock film.

I don't remember much about Wuthering Heights, it's been a long time since I saw it. He could certainly have won an Olympic medel though for being tall, dark, handsome and broody.

I really, really want to see Pride and Prejudice though. Mhmmm...

now who on earth could that be? haha. i haven't been too subtle about my feelings towards larry, have i? i believe i even had a sig set of him at one point. i think my love for olivier is surpassed only by my love for jamie bell - they're the most exciting actors to watch, but for totally different reasons.

 i am in agreement on all points. (and i'm loving the swoon smiley)

i'd love to see that too, but i can't find it anywhere. i'm not a big fan of pride and prejudice (i haven't seen any of the film adaptations, but i have read the book) and i've never understood the appeal of mr darcy, but i have a feeling that olivier may manage to convince me.

Haha, I wouldn't say you had been too subtle, no. Well my experience of Jamie Bell is King Kong soo... I couldn't possibly comment on that. ;)

The swoon smiley was put on this earth for people like Olivier. (Isn't that just a wonderful name... Olivier... :swoon:)

Yeah, same here. It took CH4 years to show Wuthering Heights and that was years ago. It's strange the films they don't show (CH4 used to be great for showing old films in the afternoons). I usually don't buy films that I haven't seen before, but I would take a chance with P&P, as I love all the other versions and this has Laurence Olivier as Darcy!

[yeah, I can understand what you mean about Darcy, I think he's great personally, yet I can't understand why I like him.. which is odd to say the least :P]

Never really understood his appeal.

I was really really dissapointed with his portrayel of Heathcliff. Actually, I was dissapointed with the whole thing really... It just wasn't close enough to the book. The new one (Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights) was much better, but that Heathcliff wasn't quite right either.

I'm going to see Rebecca soon though. Hoping he can pull of Maxim, but I'm skeptical. Maxim needs to be someone more like the old painting, as described by de Maurie.

Saw him in Rebecca the other day. Thought he did Maxim pretty well. But I wasn't to happy with the way they changed the story... but I guess they couldn't do stuff like that in old movies. :-/

But I was surprised. Maxim is kind of an odd character, but I thought he pulled it off.

I've only seen him in Pride and Prejudice where he plays Mr. Darcy. My mom says that he played an evil World War II doctor in one movie, but she won't let me see it. Are any of his other movies good? Will my mom probably let me see them?

^ it sounds like the film your mum is talking about is the boys from brazil, but it's gregory peck that plays the evil doctor (josef mengele). olivier is the nazi-hunter trying to stop his experiments.

he's made some excellent movies that your mum would probably let you watch - wuthering heights, rebecca, several shakespeare adaptations...

i guess you're referring to the manner of rebecca's death. apparently hitchcock didn't feel he could have maxim deliberately kill rebecca, as he thought a leading man who turned out to be a murderer would affect the film's popularity. and i guess the censors probably had something to do with it to, as i'm sure it would be against their rules to have someone get away with murder, whereas it would just about be passable to have him get away with covering up an accident. i believe hitch did a similar think in vertigo.

Yup. That made the reason for his not telling anyone seem bogus to me. I don't know how the book version of Vertigo went. I guess maybe he pushed the girl off the tower?

Well I can't really remember much about Wuthering Heights, as it was so long ago when I saw it. As for the book, I have never read it, and you'll never find the perfect book adaptation anyway. Look at Babe by Dick-King Smith. Perfect adaptation... except for the fact it's set in Australia and it has American accented people in it instead of it being in England. :eyeroll:

As for Rebecca, personally that is my favourite Hitchcock film and is probably one of my favourite Olivier performances. The book itself is one of my favourite books as well, and even for the changes I love them both equally.

Like the Bette Davis film The Letter. She and the director wanted her character to get away with murder, but it was not allowed at that time to show criminals in films getting away with their crimes. That's why every bad guy in old films always died, whether they were really bad or not. It's how things were then.

it's amazing how much old films did manage to get past the censors though. there are lot of double entendres and inferences that probably only got through because the censors were too innocent-minded to pick up on them.

Very true. I think censors were pretty think people actually, as there are a lot of clever writers who managed to slip things past them because want they were hinting at was either very vague or disguised in some way.
