Just a little poem I scribbled down while waiting for my dad to pick me up (I'm afraid of driving so I don't drive myself) after I stopped by and visted my old high school for the first time since graduation in June.

I wait at the crosswalk,
a smile on my face.
Glancing up and down the street for a glimpse of that familiar car.
The wind rushes through the leaves of the tall oaks surrounding
the building I practically called home for four years,
Just the same way they did
Four months ago
When I stood at this same spot.

Inside, things have not changed either.
The halls are still filled with laughter as students make their way outside,
rejoicing in the three-day weekend that stretches before them.
Some teachers have left and new ones have replaced them--
their names and faces strange to me as I passed the once-familiar classrooms in the halls.
Yet for the most part, the school remains the same.

And still, something feels different about it, something that I cannot place.
It gnaws away at the corner of my mind as I wait in the chilly fall air,
watching the crimson leaves tumble all around me
Just as they do year after year.

And suddenly, it hits me.
It is not my school that has changed,
but rather, it is me.

I get it, thats how I felt when I went back to visit my high school. Even though I had only been gone for a few months, it felt like so much had changed but not with the school, with me. (and I'm afraid of driving too. Its not a fun fear)
