Okay, so I have had this story I've been writing called Dragonscar. (There is a thread where I was posting a few chapters, but will no longer post any chapters on there (I won't take those first few down, though)). It's been several years in the making. Last summer I wrote a poem for it. In a way it's a back story to when the actual story takes place. Kind of like a history written in song. Maybe as a bard would sing! An easy way to learn histories and stories back in the day, but turning it into songs!

So here it is!

(Also, the poem is titled "The Dragonscar" while the story is simply "Dragonscar" (no 'The' for the story).

In antient tales and long-told lore
There is whisper of a great war
Not between lord and mortal king
But with dreams and dragon wing.

An immortal king, a being of old
With great power with which he could mold
The mind of any who slept so deep
Fair dream or nightmare he could reap.

The last of his kind, he stood alone
Wandering and corrupted to the bone
Unlike his brothers he could not fade
So of his pure self he became a shade

Darkness to his heart once of gold
To greater power his soul he sold
Corrupt grew his mind in corners dark
Nightmares he brought, cold and stark

But he wished for more than petty dreams
To rip the worlds mind apart at the seams
Over people he wished to reign
Many men went truly insane.

But guardians watch over the world
So their mighty wings were unfurled
Over sea and over land
Before the king they took a stand

Dragon strong and dragon tall
They would not see the world fall
So dragon fire filled the sky
As the battle raged on high

The King of Dreams faught hard
He fled away, gravely scarred
He had not lost but neither won
Until a wounded dragon he came upon

He slew it in an easy stroke
And stole away under his cloak
A dragon scale so long and thin
With power he could weild within

With this scale he would bind
The power he had over mind
Thus the Dragonscar was made
A shining strong crymson blade

Many strong dragons fell
Under the Dragonscar's mighty spell
Decaying mind and rampant madness
Always followed by everlasting sadness

He could not be stopped by dragon fire
And so the days grew utterly dire
One last hope alone would stand
A thief in the night and slight of hand

Thus the Dragonscar was stolen
The King of Dream's anger swollen
More havoc than before he brought
On mortal man and beast, distraught

But over fear and over strife
The Elder dragon gave up his life
His great roar shook the Earth
Making all quiver by their hearth

He sealed away the King of old
No power did he withold
Using all his power and might
The Elder dragon died that night

Sealed away in forgotten tomb
So removed the world's doom
Yet dragons mourned a great loss
For it was at a great cost

But what happened to Dragonscar?
It was not taken all too far
Into the safe of a mortal king
To be guarded like a precious ring

And so it is was sealed away
Hoped to never again see light of day
Ages passed and the young grew old
Deeds became legend often told.

So songs were sung of that day
That memories of the past would never fade
The Dragonscar the king had gotten
But such strife could never be forgotten

So remember remember the Great War
So as not to repeat what happened before
Of dark nightmares and dragon fire
Of battles fought when days were dire

So peace fell upon the kingdoms
From nightmares all had freedom
We thought joy would forever reign
While King of Dreams sealed he would remain

But after a long peace
The strength of seal began to decrease
An influence on men he made
Revenge on dragons would be paid

A listener of the King of Dreams
Heard the voice through the seal's seams.
He hatched a plan to free his king
And give him back this mighty thing.

Rare was someone who could creep
Into the mortal king's strong keep
This kind of man was very uncommon
But listener found it within a shaman.

So deep in the night it was stolen away
Under the King of Dream's sway
But shamman knew who pulled the strings
And would not give up this mighty thing

To its maker the Dragonscar did not return
Because the shaman had concern
Over the world of Elshador
So the Dragonscar away was bore

Using the weapon's massive power
He was gone within the hour
To a world beyond that of Elshador
Where Dragonscar was lost forever more

But the power of the Dragonscar
Caused a madness to loudly roar
Of a dragon who was far too close
So into rampage madness the dragon goes

None would kill it for fear of curse
Till the destruction became much worse
Then mortal king that the shaman stole from
to the rescue of he people he would come

In final feild and wood afar
Blood was spilt and the ground charred
The dragon was killed by mortal king
But he did not fly on victory's wing

His life he gave to save his kingdom
From thralls of madness people had freedom
The king's line was cursed as Dragonbane
Because a dragon had been slain

So a king fell and another rose
Whom none chose to oppose
But Dragonscar and King of Dreams
Are lost forever, or so it seems

A great story from here can be told
Of redemption and powers of old
The ripple effect of the Great War
And now peace there will restore

All this for the tale of a mighty thing
Of a story whose plot now can spring
The tale of Dragonback and Dragonbane
The story of the Dragonscar now remains

Nice poem!

My favorite kind of poetry is fantasy poetry where it actually tells a story. :) *thumbs up*

It's the funnest to write in my opinion as well.
