Survivor’s Guilt

Into the barren fields of fading sunlight
He walketh alone, grim and fearless
The dry wind on his face for sole companion
Still flushed by the ethereal dance of clashing iron

Into the deserted field where no bird sings
His hollow, crimson mind remembereth
Every step he taketh with solemn cry
In the clear dawn where end began

With the tearing echo of battle horns
And music of spreading banners
Heralding the charging passage
Of the Company in gleaming steel

Long did their youthful will cross harsh fury
Scratching their bold hope with each blow
And swiftly shattered their proud shields
Ere the darkening of their doomed fate

And thus amongst the scars of war he walketh
All mirth and blissful triumph blown away
By the sorrowful vision of those
Who followed the departing sun

Abashed, his helmet he taketh
And kneeleth amid his fallen brothers
Addressing a dour litany to his heathen Gods
His tears cleansing the soil ground

Why, quoth he to the shadows of dusk
Hath he borne in loneliness
The sight of such direful death?
Thus was the agony of survival

Everlasting guilt to roam the earth

Ten years and months too late, why did I not see this beautiful poem before now? Why has not the passing years not brought fair comment at all? I am sure you have long since departed into the west and will not see this, but thank you Linwe for sharing this!

Same here. It is a lovely piece, yet far too late. There is a lot of pieces like that I wager.
