Post subject: | Hobbit Screenplay |
I am writing up a Hobbit screenplay (just for fun, it's not good enough to actually use it!). I'll be posting it one scene at a time (probably one scene every two weeks or so), and any comments or suggestions would be welcome. ![]() OK, here goes!.... ____________________ Scene 1: Bilbo Baggins Older Bilbo [voiced by Ian Holm] (V.O.): In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a dirty wet hole, or a dry sandy hole, but a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. The door of Bag End opens, and Bilbo comes out and sits down on his porch and starts smoking his pipe. Gandalf approaches. Bilbo: Good morning! Gandalf [with a twinkle in his eye]: What do you mean by that? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean it is good whether I like it or not; or that you feel good this morning, or that it is a morning to be good on? Bilbo: [Thinks for a moment] All of them at once, I suppose. [They both laugh] I'm sorry sir, but I don't think I know your name. Gandalf: Yes, you know my name, Bilbo Baggins, though you don't remember that I belong to it. I am Gandalf the Grey. Bilbo: [In surprise and admiration] Gandalf? Not the old wandering wizard who used to make such excellent fireworks! Gandalf: Yes. I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone. Bilbo: Well, we don't want any adventures here, thank you. [To himself] Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner. [He gets up and walks towards his door] But please come to tea sometime. Tomorrow? Come tomorrow! Goodbye! [He shuts the door] Bilbo [Inside Bag End]: What on earth did I ask him to tea for? [Shot of Gandalf sitting outside of Bag End, thinking] [Flashback to a scene in Nogrod] Gandalf: You must go secretly, Thorin. Open war is useless. Thorin: What do you suggest we do? Gandalf: My plan is one of stealth. You may be sure that the Dragon is waiting for the day when the Dwarves shall return to claim their own. Each night, his ears are listening for the sound of... Dwarf-feet. Balin: You make stealth seem impossibly difficult. Gandalf: Not impossibly difficult. Absurdly difficult would be nearer the mark. So I will suggest an absurd solution to the problem: something that the Dragon has probably never heard of, and has certainly never smelt. Thorin [impatiently]: What is it? [Gandalf smiles] [Scene switches back to Gandalf at Bag End] Gandalf stands up and walks up to the door. He laughs quietly to himself, and makes a strange mark in the center of Bilbo's door with his staff. Then he turns and walks away. ____________________ So what do you think? |

Scene 2: An Unexpected Party The doorbell rings. Bilbo gets up and runs towards the door. Bilbo: I'm coming, Gandalf! [He opens the door. There are the dwarves (minus Thorin).] Balin: Balin, son of Fundin, at your service. [He steps inside] Bilbo [surprised]: Bilbo Baggins at yours! I was just about to take tea; please come and have some with me. Gloin: A little beer would suit me better, thank you. The dwarves hang their hooded cloak on a peg in the hallway and follows Bilbo into the dining room. The doorbell rings again. Bilbo [to Balin]: Half a minute! [He runs towards the door and opens it. Thorin stands outside, with Gandalf right behind him.] Gandalf: This is Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of this merry band of dwarves. [He chuckles] Thorin: Well, I see we are all here. Let's join the throng! [He joins the others] Bilbo [relieved that Gandalf has finally arrived]: Welcome! [Wondering what kind of mischief the old wizard is up to] Gandalf, what is going on here? What do all these dwarves want? Gandalf: You asked me to come to tea, so I took the liberty to invite a few friends. [He laughs] I hope you don't mind... Bilbo [rolling his eyes] Oh, no. Of course not. Gandalf: Good. That's settled then. Bilbo: I just hope we don't run out of food. They are dwarves, after all. Gandalf: But they don't eat nearly as much as hobbits do. [He winks at Bilbo] Bilbo: But what do they all want? Gandalf: You will find out soon enough. There will be time enough for questions later. [He puts an arm around the hobbit's shoulders and gives him a reassuring look, and they go off to join the others.] The party eats and talks for a while, then they help Bilbo clean up the dishes (except Thorin, who remains behind talking to Gandalf, while the wizard smokes his pipe). Thorin: Are you sure about this, Gandalf? Gandalf: Yes, in fact, I am. You must take this hobbit with you. He's an excitable little fellow, but as fierce as a dragon in a pinch. [Thorin grunts] Thorin: I am wondering if you do not have other purposes than helping me. [At this point, the dwarves begin to return.] Gandalf: Of course! If I had no other purposes, I would not be helping you at all. As important as your quest seems to you, it is only one small strand in the great web. I am concerned with many strands. [The dwarves and Bilbo are now seated around the table.] ____________________ More next week! |

Sorry it's taken so long. I've had some problems with logging in. OK, here's the next scene: ____________________ Scene 3: Dark for Dark Business Gandalf blows a smoke-dragon (like the ship in FOTR, only a dragon this time). The smoke-dragon floats up towards the ceiling. The screen fades out into darkness, but the smoke-dragon remains. It slowly morphs into Smaug flying through the air as the screen fades in to a flashback of Smaug's attack on Erebor. [Flashback] Thrain looks up and sees Smaug flying towards Erebor. Thrain: The Dragon is upon us! Prepare for battle! In Dale... Warrior 1: Smaug has descended on Erebor. Warrior 2: To arms! To arms! Girion draws his sword and prepares to lead his men against the Dragon. Back in Erebor... The dwarves attempt to flee from Erebor, but they are trapped by Smaug and consumed in fire from his mouth. Young Thorin manages to escape with Balin. They flee west, and watch the destruction of Dale from afar. Back in Dale... The warriors of Dale try in vain to destroy Smaug, but they are burned along with their city. A few men escape and flee south. Girion is left alone to face the Dragon. He fights, and is slain like the rest. West of Erebor... Thorin: Vengeance shall be ours oneday: we shall return to the home of our fathers, and seek the destruction of Smaug. Thorin [V.O.]: And so the people of Erebor and Dale fell into ruin, at the hands of the dragon Smaug. We swore to oneday return to the land of our fathers and regain the great treasure that lay in the Mountain. Thorin and Balin make their camp west of Erebor and grieve their losses. Suddenly, Thrain appears out of the shadows. Thorin: Father! Thrain: Thorin, my son! [The two embrace] Thorin: How did you escape? Thrain: You will learn when the time comes. Thorin [V.O.]: I have often wondered how my father escaped. But I never found out the truth, for my father departed from our ancient fortress in the Ered Luin and desired to look one last time on the Mountain before he died. He said he would return, but he was never seen again. [Scene returns to Bag End] Gandalf produces a map of the Lonely Mountain and spreads it out on the table. Gandalf: Thrain never reached Erebor. He was ambushed by orcs, and taken to Dol Guldur. There I found him, in the dungeons of the Necromancer. Thorin [in shock]: Whatever were you doing there? [The dwarves shudder] Gandalf: Never you mind. I was finding things out, as usual. Before Thrain died, he gave me this map. It is a map of Erebor and the surrounding lands. The dwarves pore over the map. Gandalf: The hand points to a secret entrance on the west side of the Mountain. Thorin: At last it seems I have learned how my father escaped. But how shall we find the door, if it is a secret lain hidden for so long? Gandalf: We shall see. And when you do find it, you may need this. [He hands the key to Thorin] Thorin take the key from Gandalf, and looks down at the map. Thorin: "Five feet high the door, and three may walk abreast". The Dragon could never creep into a hole that size. Gandalf: No, but a hobbit could. ____________________ More later! By the way, thanks for all the comments! |

That's really neat! It would be cool if the hobbit could be made into a movie. If it was, I hope they would do it similar to the way you have it. ![]() |
