*sigh* How come I seem to be one of the few who likes the Tale of Beren and Luthien/The Lay of Leithan better?

Lol, I do too, but since this is a thread about The Children of Hurin, people might be attracted by the title... I'm sure you'll find tons of Luthien+Beren fans in those designated threads... and there are quite a lot a topics on Lúthien and Beren, so that indicates some interest on the tale! ;-)

Good point--I suppose the Turin fans would be more drawn to this than the Beren and Luthien fans.

I love the cover. But I don't think I'll get the book. The Childern of Hurin is not my favorite story.

Okay, that is just weird. WHAT IS SO ENTHRALLING ABOUT THAT DEPRESSING STORY!!?!?!? :annoyed: I have never understood why people like it so much. I know it was well written, and interesting, but it was so incredibly depressing. Everything that could go wrong for Turin's life, did go wrong. I like the story, but I find it extremely depressing, which means I like it less than the tale of Beren and Luthien. :annoyed2:

I don't meant offend anyone, but I really don't understand what makes it everyone's favorite.

Well the fact that it is depressing is actually one of the reasons why I like it so much. I mean most stories have a happy ending - this one doesn't, so it's something different. Also I can see myself in some aspects of his life (not in all aspects.. not my whole life goes wrong), but I can identify with Túrin in many ways. I also like the story of Beren and Lúthien though. It's not as if I only liked the Narn. The story of Beren and Lúthien is one of my favourites as well.

 I don't think I'll ever understand why people like depressing stories.

I don't like it because it's depressing. I'm not entirely sure why I like it. I think, quite frankly, I may like it best because it conjures up fabulous images in my mind. For every word of every story there's a picture in my brain, and some stories are more beautiful than others. I don't know why. This one is really beautiful.

I think perhaps another reason I like it is bcause of the courage of the characters. Yes, in the end they give in to despair, but look at all the years they don't! Nienor disguises herself and goes after her brother. Turin chooses to live on and to continue fighting even after incredible personal loss.

But honestly, I don't know for certain why I like this story so much. I'm the sort of person that easily takes on another's pain or frustration, and I feel a lot of empathy for the characters. As to why I don't like Luthien and Beren more...why are people acting as though the Narn and the Lay are the only two stories in Tolkien? There is another story I rank just as highly as the story of Turin and Nienor- and that's the kin-strife of Numenor. I also like reading about the Fall of Numenor. After all that, I suppose the story of Luthien and Beren is nice. I like it, certainly, but have no reason to call it my favorite. I'm more drawn to the tales that show intense strength of character, and all that...and really, I think that the Lay of Luthien is more depressing than many of the other stories in Tolkien.

LOL! :D
I dunno why I like it lots too..maybe cuz it doesnt seem so depressing to me.

by the way, has this book been released yet? I really wanna get it for my birthday maybe which is in early Apr.

but it took me...like..half a day to read the whole story of Turin Turambar. I was really into it and couldnt put it down...and I read it ever second I had the chance. It was just really interesting, and I adore all the characters...Turin and Nienor are my favorites.

and I could say the same for the tale of Beren and Luthien-why does everyone like the story a lot?

edit:
man! I just looked on the internet and I think its not released till Apr 17. :( grr...7 days after my birthday. oh well...I'll try to buy it on my own.

I can answer the Beren & Luthien question--it's because that story has a bittersweet ending, not a completely unhappy and tragic one like the Narn í Hin Hurín.

And I think I can understand why you like Turín and Nienor's story so much. I think.

Yeah, I didnt find Beren and Luthien's tale..so interesting. and I know a whole lot of people say thats one of their favorite stories in the Sil.

And yes, one of the reasons too I like the story of Turin are the charatcers in it..and the plot-line is neat..even if its tragic depressing.

But in the Narn í Hin Hurín, there are no sacrifices...only suicides. I've always loved it how Beren blocks Carcharoth's approach to Thingol, despite the mistreatment he received because of that king. And then there's Luthien. She's the most beautiful of the Children of Iluvatar, and she gives up immortal life to be with Beren. It's a beautiful story, in my opinion.

Yup, that too. and I was just thinking. Will this book take place before the story of Turin and all..like..if it took place after...Nienor and Turin are already dead. and I dont remember Morwen and Hurin having other children, well, besides that other one..whose name starts with an "L" I believe.
