Well theoretically he could be a Vala then, but he doesn't really have the characteristics that all the other Valar have in common. And also in the Council of Elrond it is said that Tom Bombadil alone would not have the power to defeat Sauron and that he would fall as the last person in Middle-Earth if the council gave the ring to him. So I don't think that he is a Vala, because Sauron is a Maia and it is said that the Valar are more powerful than the Maiar so if Tom was a Vala he should be powerful enough to defeat Sauron in my opinion.

Yeah, that was a point I thought of yesterday while I was grounded. Tom can't be a Vala if he doesn't have the power to defeat Sauron. Unless he had really strange beliefs about nonviolence that wouldn't let him defend himself.

I love your point about about strange believes of nonviolence, it made me smile :)
Yeah I think you're right. I guess for me the most plausible explanation is that Tom is a Maia.

Lol, Fíriel. It was meant to sound [s]humorous[/s] unlikely.

But I think Tom is a Maia, which leaves us wondering what in the world Beorn was. Half-Maia, maybe?

I know that's why I said that it made me smile :-D
Yeah Beorn could be half-Maia, why not, but what is his "other half"?? maybe something like a natural spirit or so??

I've always associated natural spirits with Maiar. I was thinking that maybe his other half was human--he's too tall to be a dwarf, and too rugged to be an elf. At least, so far as I imagine him.

yeah that's right. Both elf and dwarf definitely don't fit. Well, a combination of a Maia and a Human - very unusual, but that's Beorn is I think. He seems to be an unusual combination, so I would agree with what you say.

Darn. We've come to a conclusion. There isn't much more point in debating. *sniff*

I guess we might as well leave this thread--it's served its purpose.
