All of his care and passion seemed to go into creating the Elves and their relationship with Men... but then the Hobbits with their simplicity and unseen bravery make a big impact as well...

Strange. I think it's the most well rounded and thought out/planned characters that are the author's favourite... So I think characters such as Sam are his favourites... 'The bravery of the common man,' as it were.

Just a thought.
