How interesting. Goldberry sounds like the name of a hobbit, if you ask me. It rings a bell that categorizes itself with hobbits. But obviously, she isn't. It's nice to think of her being a river spirits. How magical.
Thanks, Larael Greenleaf, for your helpful and detailed piece of information.

It's a fair assumption to say she's a Maiar- it's really the only thing she could be...

Your quite welcome Elberethsq.
Your right Tirithiel a Maiar is the only thing that would make sense for her to be.

Ohhh, another of the longest running arguments on the other board
I will stick by what I said Goldberry was in the other thread, that I imagined her as a sort of "Gold-Elf", something more powerful than an elf... and glimmery...

I myself find her to be more like a maia. Though she does show some traits of being an elf, though I don't think it's right.

I think that she is a Maia like Tom Bombadil. In the book it describes her as "a fair young elf-queen" because that's what she resembles, and when she speaks, Frodo "stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices" but I don't actually think that she's an elf. My theory is that she's a Maia but I guess we'll never really know.

Found this on a Goldberry fanlisting-
Woman, wife of Tom Bombadil. She was the daughter of the River-woman of the Withywindle. Goldberry was fair and golden-haired, gracious and calm, with a beauty like to that of Elves yet more easily encompanied by Hobbitish hearts. Also called River-daughter.
-your welcome

That's what it says exactly in The complete guide to middle earth

I agree with Lareal, well she did find entries from Arda. I think she is a river spirit and in the order of Maia, but many and some can disagree from this because the ring had no effect on him. Then that leads to the Valas. People think he couldn't be one because there were 14, and the Valas can resist the power of the ring. Or Tom could have been Ilúvatar himself. Ilúvatar is the creator of Arda. Middle Earth is basically a continent on Arda. Like in ancient Greek and Roman stories, they believed it was rude for someone to ask for a place to say and not let them stay in there home. (Today we don't do this, because of some people) They say it is rude because it could have been one of the gods in disguise. If you passed this you probably wouldn't get rewarded or anything like that. But in the Arda there is only one Creator which is Ilúvatar himself. Though some of his Valas created some of the creatures living in Arda, Valas are not Gods. Tolkien clearly states that men often say that, but use it wrong.

hmmm..i'm not too keen on Iluvatar being Tom Bombadil for some reason, no offence. But say Goldberry was a maia, would she have any contact with Valinor or anything like that?..sorri just had to ask , sounds pretty stupid i know..

Well, the Maiar are the Valars "servants", so they would most definantly have contact with the Valar. They do things in Middle-earth that the Valar want to be done.

I've always thought she was a Maia.
