yeah I agree with that. I think Gandalf had an even match with the Balrog. I mean in the Sil they're always portrayed (spelling??) as one of Morgoth's most powerful servants after Sauron, so I think they must have been very powerful.

Oh, I certainly agree. However, note the "(so it seems)" in my post--I wasn't saying that he didn't use more power in The Hobbit, only that it was less evident.
True... I imagined it as a battle of will more than a show of visible power...
(Yeah, I noticed the 'so it seems' in your post, but you also said something like 'he shows off some of his power', but I think I was just making a general reply! )
